Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has updated people on her husband Derek Draper's condition, after he moved back home last month to continue his recovery from COVID-19.

Derek was admitted to intensive care with coronavirus during the first lockdown, having to remain in hospital for about a year as a result of the damage the virus has caused to his body.

Appearing on yesterday's (May 23) The Andrew Marr Show, Kate told her fellow broadcaster how Derek is currently doing, and sadly there is still a long road to recovery he's got to take.

Kate said: 'He came home on April 7 so we're a few weeks into it now. How is he? Look, he's devastated by COVID. He can't really move, his communication is very minimal.

'There are moments where there's up, you feel you know he's in there. He has a lot of memory.

'But the accessing of it is very limited. He's a long way from the Derek Draper that you know, Andrew, but he's home and he's alive, he's asleep now.'

Derek came back home in order to try and speed up his recovery and cognition, and has around-the-clock care in place.

While Kate said she was 'over the moon' about Derek's return home, she also called it "an overwhelming responsibility".

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV. The Andrew Marr Show airs Sundays at 9am on BBC One. Kate Garraway's book The Power of Hope, reflecting on the family's journey, is available now.
