Kate Garraway joined her Good Morning Britain colleagues Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid to give an update on her critically ill husband, Derek Draper.

Derek has been hospitalised since March after contracting COVID-19, and Kate was understandably emotional on Monday (2 November) as she recalled the moment he uttered his first word in months, as he mouthed "pain".

"It is a huge breakthrough," she said. "Because even though it's obviously heartbreaking... because what it means is that he feels pain – which we don't want – but it is a breakthrough because what it means... is that he's been able to connect a sensation in his body with his brain and connect that to his mouth to shape the word 'pain'."

Kate went on: "I believe he is in there. That's a long way from who Derek is... but it's a start."

The former I'm a Celebrity contestant also explained that "the power of hope is huge, but you're constantly trying to think if hope is still real".

"I was getting scared because I was thinking how hard must it be for him stuck in there," she said. "He's been able to fight out of there."
