Kate Garraway has expressed her gratitude towards Jeremy Kyle for helping out with her children while her husband remains in intensive care.

Garraway’s husband, former lobbyist Derek Draper, has been in hospital since March, when he was placed in an induced coma after contracting the coronavirus.

A couple of weeks ago, the broadcaster gave a hopeful update on her partner’s condition, saying he was “focused and engaged” while watching his wife on television.

While co-hosting Good Morning Britain on Monday 3 August, Garraway revealed that their two children, 14-year-old Darcey and 11-year-old Billy, had travelled to their grandparents‘ home to see them for the first time since lockdown.

The 53-year-old revealed that Kyle stepped in to lend a helping hand to assist with transporting the children to their grandparents.

“My children for the first time have gone to stay away from home. They’ve gone to stay with Derek’s mum and dad,” Garraway said.

“Now Derek’s mum and dad have been shielding since the beginning of March because they both feel vulnerable so this was a very big deal for them to have the children to stay.”

The radio and television presenter stated that it was “very important” for both her children and their grandparents to see one another, having been separated for a significant amount of time.

Garraway outlined how the family planned “over several weeks” how Darcey and Billy would make the journey to see their relatives.

“So I thought right, we have to be very clear, we have to isolate in the days before they leave to travel. I actually washed and packed Darcy and Billy’s clothes and sealed them for quite a few days just in case there was anything that might be problematic there,” she said.

Garraway added that she did not travel up with her children, as their grandparents had “not even had contact with Derek’s sisters, so I didn’t want to be an extra person coming into their lives”.

“So actually thanks to Jeremy Kyle they travelled up, big thanks to him, because he said, ‘Listen, my driver has been isolating and keeping the car very clean so I’ll take the children up’,” she said.

After joking that Kyle could set up a taxi service called “Kyle Cars”, she added: “Very, very kind of him, thank you very much Jeremy.”

When her children arrived at their grandparents’ house, their clothes were immediately put in the wash “with gloved hands” and “they both had a bath and a hair wash”.

It was recently reported that elderly people and those at increased risk from the coronavirus could be asked to stay at home again under plans to avoid a second national lockdown.
