Kate Garraway opened up about her husband Derek Draper’s birthday last weekend – and described celebrating it as “challenging”.
Colleague Adil asked if she had a nice couple of days off. Kate replied: “It was Derek’s birthday on Saturday, which was obviously a challenging one under the circumstances. We managed to FaceTime him and sing Happy Birthday, and we had a cake which we showed him.”
Adil commented that it must be very difficult for the couple’s kids, and Kate said: “It’s very challenging, they’re doing brilliantly with it though. We managed to hook up and do it with Derek’s family, and just hope the love seeps through really.”
She continued: “Thanks to Charlotte [Hawkins] for swapping with me. She bought me a rose bush named The Rose of Hope, which is really sweet, and it actually came into flower on Saturday on Derek’s birthday. It was very sweet, so thank you Charlotte.”
Kate presented Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain with Adil Ray, and shared a throwback selfie of the pair together on Instagram, suggesting they should recreate it after he said he’d like to hug her but he can’t.
Before taking a couple of days off, Kate said she’d had a challenging week but felt bad talking about it on Good Morning Britain because she likes to try and cheer people up.
Her husband Derek has been in hospital since March after falling seriously ill with coronavirus. Kate told Adil last week that it was a worrying week as he still has “lots of challenges”, including with his food and lungs.
