Kate Garraway is hoping to make a sequel to the hard-hitting documentary she fronted earlier this year about her husband's battle with COVID-19.

The 54-year-old presenter won the Authored Documentary prize at the National Television Awards this week for Finding Derek, which traced the impact of the disease on her husband Derek Draper.

A former political lobbyist, Draper caught the coronavirus in March 2020 and was subsequently taken to intensive care and put into an induced coma.

He suffered multiple infections and organ failure and was unable to return home until April this year — though he is still unable to move.

Garraway has now told The Sun she hopes to revisit her initial documentary, which aired in March, and explore Draper's continued road to recovery since returning home.

“We are going to make another documentary — there are plans for more," said Garraway.

She added: “Derek has a very short window of energy, but we are trying. He has been home for four months now and it was enough for him being home.

“Now we are really hoping we can have more and more people in to see him.”

Garraway delivered an emotional acceptance speech when she scooped the award this week and also shared an image on social media of her video call with Derek in which she broke the news.

In her caption, she wrote: "From him and from the bottom of our family’s hearts THANK YOU.

"For all who are struggling on and holding on to hope - this is for you.”

Finding Derek was watched by around 4.5 million viewers when it aired earlier this year on ITV and left many of those who watched it in tears.
