Kate Garraway has spoken of the "lovely moment" over the Christmas break that she and her children were able to visit husband Derek Draper in hospital as he battles Covid-19.

The TV presenter was back on Good Morning Britain on Thursday (7th January) with co-host and close friend Ben Shephard, revealing that the family's emotional visit was the first time her children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, have been able to see their father since he was hospitalised with coronavirus in March.

"It was tough wasn't it... I mean it was tough for everybody and I knew it was going to be tough," Kate told viewers.

"There was a lovely moment which we did have, which was we did over the Christmas period get to see Derek, and the children did, which is the first time they have been able to do that. Which was amazing."

Kate continued: "Of course it was very heightened with emotion, because he was very changed. So all the routines we would normally do, it was one of those moments where it was so wonderful but then it sort of amplified how sad everything was. Does that make sense? And how different it is. But it was still fantastic and very grateful to have had that opportunity. "

Kate then explained that due to the national lockdown, which was officially implemented on Wednesday, she won't be able to see Derek for a while now.

"Instantly, now I'm in a position even I can't visit," the TV star said. "We're into lockdown. No visits at all which I hope doesn't last for the whole of lockdown. Because I think that will be very impactful."

Derek is now Covid-free after being hospitalised with the virus in March last year, but the 53-year-old is one of an estimated five people in the world to have been affected so badly by coronavirus and still be alive.

Kate had previously said it was her "dream" for her children to be able to see their dad over the Christmas period. She also revealed that Derek is now breathing on his own, and hopes it signifies the beginning of his recovery.

Sending lots of love to Kate and her family.

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays on ITV.
