Karlie Kloss has shed light on the struggles she's faced as a first-time mother after welcoming her son Levi earlier this year, crediting her fellow model mums for their support.

The model, known for her impressive runway career and fame as a former Victoria's Secret Angel, recently told WSJ. Magazine that she was in 'survival mode' after giving birth to her son in March.

The 29-year-old, who acknowledged the help of fellow famous mode mothers Ashley Graham and Emily Ratajkowski for encouraging her to grow in confidence, recalled asking her husband, venture capitalist investor Joshua Kushner, 'How does everyone do this?' following the birth of their son.

As well as turning to the likes of Graham, who is now expecting twin boys, and My Body author Ratajkowski, who also has an infant son, Kloss said that fellow model Irina Shayk, mother of four-year-old Lea De Seine, has supported her when it comes to juggling motherhood with a busy work schedule.

Kloss had previously insisted that she wouldn't be swayed by 'the mum group friendship thing'. 'That’s cute but that’s not going to be me,' she said she previously felt.

Now, the former ELLE UK cover star says her friendships to fellow mothers are vital. 'I don’t make a move without asking my mum friends,' she admitted.

Kloss, who stands at 6ft 2in and has been modelling since the age of 13, also reflected on how motherhood has changed her relationship with her body.

'I love my body in a way that I never have,' Kloss told the same publication, before adding: 'I never imagined that I would have a career [in which] my body would be so intertwined with my success or failure. That’s something that I really don’t like about being a model, but — it’s part of the job.'

The mother-of-one has also said that Levi has inherited her height. 'I know [Levi’s] ready to shoot some hoops,' she joked.

Kloss, who married Kushner in an intimate ceremony in 2018, put her ability to start a family down to her newfound approach to self-care during Covid-19.

'Maybe that was why I was able to get pregnant—for the first time I was taking care of myself,' she said, after mentioning that the pandemic also made her rethink her goals.

Last month Kloss and Kushner celebrated their 10-year anniversary.

At the time Kloss shared a photo from their wedding day on Instagram with the caption: 'Almost 10 years together, three as husband & wife, and one (half) as parents. I fall more in love with you every single day. Happy anniversary JK. [sic]'

As for now, she's seemingly taking charge of her career as well as being a devoted mum. And she's not letting the controversy surrounding her connection to the Trump family (through her husband, who's the brother of Ivanka Trump's spouse, Jared Kushner) get in the way.

'I’ve had to grow really thick skin as it relates to [being] impacted by other people’s opinions,' she said. 'Whether they love me or they hate me — because I’ve experienced all of it,' she said.

Kloss, a proud feminist, previously told ELLE UK: 'I’m as competitive with myself as much as [I am] with other people and peers.

'I have grand ambitions to have a successful career, and have a successful personal life, and make a meaningful impact on the world…’
