Former The Real Housewives of Orange County star, Kara Bosworth, has shared her son died during childbirth.

The 32-year-old told her Instagram followers that during childbirth her son, McCoy Casey Bosworth, experienced shoulder dystocia and a compressed umbilical cord during the course of his birth.

He was born at 3.10am on 6 April, and Bosworth said: “weighing in at 11 pounds and 4 ounces and spanning 21 inches, McCoy surprised us all with his size and strength (and overall perfection).”

“He joined our Heavenly Father and will live forever in the hearts of his loving parents, his adoring sister, and those that received his life-saving gifts,” she added.

Bosworth also shared the beautifully written note she wrote to the the organ and tissue donation team in McCoy’s honour.

“Tonight, we join together to honor [sic] this little savior’s [sic] gifts of life. Through him, may others find new hope and profound healing... and may he live again through them.

“May his legacy shine in the form of lifetimes aplenty - lives filled with laughter, compassion, energy, love, and most of all gratitude. May it be said that McCoy Casey Bosworth left this world in a better place, for a better place.... that he made an impact... that he was an answered prayer... that he was a hero. May angels lead him in. Thank you, McCoy.”

Shoulder dystocia and a compressed umbilical cord are both rare complications in childbirth.

According to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, shoulder dystocia happens when the baby’s head has been born but one - or both - of its shoulders becomes stuck. In most cases, the baby will be born safely and will have no lasting or long-term problems as a result.

A compressed umbilical cord happens when the baby’s umbilical cord becomes flattened by pressure during labour. Again, in most cases this is easy to spot and is dealt with quickly to ensure no long-term damage happens.

Bosworth, who has a 4-year-old daughter, Decker, openly shares her family life on her social media account, which has made the news even harder for some of her fans.

She also runs a blog called The Pushover Project where she shared an open letter “to her first baby, as we prepare for the arrival of our last baby”.

The beautifully written and heartbreaking post is written to “the soon-to-be Big of our soon-to-be Little” and shares little snippets of family life.

“When you’re not the baby anymore, our ‘family hugs’ might be a bit more crowded. Your face’s place between ours might, for you, feel less grounded without the bookends of your parents’ cheeks balanced evenly on either side of yours.

“But, with that, I can tell you this: With that extra face in our love huddle, our team will feel so much more complete and you will thrive with a forever friend and someone to lean on when life feels heavy – especially when Mom and Dad aren’t around anymore someday a very, very long time from now.” One of the most poignant paragraphs read.
