Kanye West is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department after being named as a suspect in a battery case following an alleged altercation that took place on 13 January, reports claim.

According to TMZ, the 44-year-old rapper got into an altercation at Soho Warehouse in downtown LA that allegedly "turned physical". Speaking about the alleged incident, an insider said: "We're told Kanye allegedly pushed someone." Elsewhere, Fox News reports that Kanye "punche[d] fan who asked for his autograph."

"This morning, at 3am officers responded to Santa Fe Ave and Bay Street" a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told the Metro. "A Battery Report was completed with Kanye West as a named suspect. No arrests have been made and the incident is being investigated by our Newton Division." The Metro also claims that the case is being investigated as misdemeanour battery – which carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison if found guilty.

Prior to the alleged altercation, on Wednesday Kanye was announced as a headliner at this year's Coachella festival in LA. He'll perform for the festival's 250,000 strong crowd along with other confirmed headliners, Harry Styles and Billie Eilish, when it returns after two years in April.

News of the alleged incident comes after the Donda rapper (who has legally changed his name to Ye) was spotted on a date in West Hollywood with rumoured girlfriend Julia Fox (star of Netflix's Uncut Gems). The pair were spotted arriving at a popular restaurant in the area as they held hands and stopped to share a kiss in front of the waiting paparazzi.

The couple met on New Year's Eve and have been relatively open about their romance since then – despite Kanye notoriously keeping his private life on the down low. Speaking about their new romance for the very first time, Julia opened up about how she and the rapper met, telling Interview magazine: "I met Ye in Miami on New Year's Eve and it was an instant connection."

Their relationship comes after numerous attempts on Kanye's behalf to reconcile with estranged wife, Kim Kardashian, who he was married to for six years. Kim filed for divorce from the musician in February 2021, citing "irreconcilable differences" – their divorce, which includes a custody battle for their four children, is still ongoing.
