Kaia Gerber didn't know how to check into hotels as a young model

Kaia Gerber had so little "life experience" as a young model she relied on others to check her into hotels.

The fashion star, who is the daughter of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, made her runway debut in a Calvin Klein show at the age of 16 in 2017, and has since gone on to appear in campaigns for the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Jimmy Choo, and Fendi.

But in a new cover interview for the June 2021 issue of U.S. Vogue magazine, Kaia reflected on just how green she was when she first entered the industry.

"I found myself in situations where I was, like, I actually don't have the life experience that I need to handle this," she shared. "It could be something as small as knowing how to take the bus from the flight to the terminal. Or, I remember, when I started travelling alone, in Paris, my driver had to check me into my hotel room - I couldn't even do it on my own."

Though it may have been daunting at first, Kaia soon learned the importance of asking others for help as well as how to express herself.

"I started so young that people weren't expecting me to have an opinion about things, and I was fine with that, because I didn't feel comfortable enough in who I was," the 19-year-old mused. "But when I got a little older, I started to wait for someone, especially in interviews, to ask me something other than, 'What are three items in your purse?' I was like, 'You're not asking Adam Driver that, right?' I was waiting to be invited to speak. Eventually, I invited myself. And that was a really freeing feeling."

Elsewhere in the chat, Kaia discussed her love of reading and mentioned that she still might enrol in college at some point.

"I was one of those kids in preschool who thought they'd go to Columbia one day," she added. "I can always go. I have no problem with being a 50-year-old in college."
