Kaia Gerber is the latest celebrity to unveil a post-lockdown hair transformation, and the model’s change of choice is decidedly more dramatic than most.
Where Emily Ratajkowski and the Duchess of Cambridge emerged with lighter, honeyed hues post quarantine, Gerber has opted for something a little edgier, taking her signature brown bob through a series of new shades over the course of lockdown.
The model's hair transformation actually began back in April, when she reportedly bleached her hair herself. In a move that surely made her hairdresser recoil in horror, the star told Refinery29 that she gave herself highlights using hydrogen peroxide, saying: "I literally put the straight peroxide on my hair and then dried it with a blowdryer — just to hit it with heat — and it definitely lightened my colour a shade or two – just a subtle change."
Fast-forward to this week, and Gerber unveiled a much brighter, blonder hue that contrasts with her naturally darker roots and brows. Of course, while home bleaching is rarely recommended, lightening hair gradually gives it more of a chance to recover in-between bleach applications – a smart move indeed.
Thinking of going blonde yourself? Gerber's new hue may look great, but we'd highly recommend leaving the bleach in the bathroom and booking yourself into a salon.
Now, Gerber has revealed that the blonde was simply serving as a base for a more experimental colour choice, posting a her new shocking-pink ends on Instagram today.
She credits A-list stylist Guido Palau for remotely guiding her through the DIY colour process during a Zoom call – turns out, the video platform is good for more than family quizzes.
"I've always loved people that just do whatever they want with their hair," says Gerber in the video. Waiting for her bold new hue to develop, she discusses her love of reading with Palau, revealing that she started a book club during lockdown. "When you're reading a book, no-one bothers you," the model says, saying she nurtured her love for reading during show seasons, when she'd read to pass the time backstage.
Whether the fuchsia hue is a permanent feature or a wash-out rinse remains to be seen. Either way, the post-lockdown hair transformation strikes again.
