Justin Bieber says the first year of marriage was "really tough"

Justin Bieber has opened up about the first year of marriage he shared with Hailey Bieber née Baldwin, admitting a lack of trust made things tough between them.

The pair officially tied the knot in September 2018 in a courthouse ceremony, before having a ceremony with friends and family in October 2019. Since then, Hailey has given us an insight into the struggles they faced during their first year as a married couple, while Justin has opened up with intimate details about their relationship.

Now, almost two and a half years since they made their wedding vows, the singer has candidly opened up about why the first 12 months were so hard. In an interview with GQ, Justin explained, "The first year of marriage was really tough, because there was a lot, going back to the trauma stuff," he said, referring to mental health struggles that stemmed from a life in the public eye.

"There was just lack of trust," he continued. "There w[ere] all these things that you don’t want to admit to the person that you’re with, because it’s scary. You don’t want to scare them off by saying, 'I’m scared.'"

The 27-year-old added that his fear of being vulnerable with Hailey caused him to walk "on eggshells" around her in their first year of married life, but the pair have now created a stable base to build a relationship on.

He added, "We’re just creating these moments for us as a couple, as a family, that we’re building these memories. And it’s beautiful that we have that to look forward to.

"Before, I didn’t have that to look forward to in my life. My home life was unstable. Like, my home life was not existing. I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into. But now I have that."

Sounds blissful.
