Update April 14, 2021: Justin Bieber has opened up about his first year of marriage with wife Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin).
In a recent interview with GQ, the singer admitted that a lack of trust made things tough between them during the first few months. The pair officially tied the knot in September 2018 in a courthouse ceremony, before having a ceremony with friends and family in October 2019.
Now, almost two-and-a-half years since they made their wedding vows, the singer told the publication: 'The first year of marriage was really tough, because there was a lot, going back to the trauma stuff.'
'There was just lack of trust,' he continued. 'There were all these things that you don’t want to admit to the person that you’re with, because it’s scary. You don’t want to scare them off by saying, "I’m scared".'
The 27-year-old added that his fear of being vulnerable with his wife caused him to walk 'on eggshells' around her in their first year of married life, but that the pair have now created a stable base to build a relationship on.
'We’re just creating these moments for us as a couple, as a family, that we’re building these memories. And it’s beautiful that we have that to look forward to,' he added.
'Before, I didn’t have that to look forward to in my life. My home life was unstable. Like, my home life was not existing. I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into. But now I have that.'
Bieber also noted that he always felt 'compelled' to marry, noting: 'I just felt like that was my calling. Just to get married and have babies and do that whole thing.'
When quizzed on parenthood, the singer replied: 'Not this second, but we will eventually.'
In a teaser for an interview with Apple Music’s Beats 1 host Zane Lowe (which will be released on Saturday February 15), the 25-year-old gushed about his marriage to the famous model.
‘I'm freaking married now,’ he told Lowe. ‘I got the best wife in the world. She supports me through so much. I'm really honoured to be her husband.’
Describing his new album Changes as a love letter to the 23-year-old, the singer continued, adding: ‘I want to continue to write about what it looks like to be… This is an album I wrote in the first year of our marriage, so it's so fresh.
‘There's so much more to learn about commitment, and building trust, and foundation. I'm looking forward to continuing to build and make music that's going to reflect that.'
The admission comes days after the couple shared footage of their wedding on the singer's new Netflix series, Seasons.
During an interview on The Ellen Show on Tuesday, the 25-year-old opened up to the show host about struggling with the idea of commitment.
'I was extremely nervous,’ he told DeGeneres of how he felt before popping the question to the model - who he describes as 'precious' - in 2018.
‘I felt like in the past, we had talked about you know, me asking the question, and I felt like she would say “yes”.’
The ‘Yummy’ singer continued, explaining how he wasn’t nervous about his now wife’s answer to his big question, rather about how he was going to make the promise to be faithful to her.
‘Am I able to make this commitment as a man and be able to honour you know, what I say, you know because that's a serious commitment, when you say you're gonna love someone for better or for worse and like, be faithful,’ he recalled.
‘That's huge. Am I able to do that? And so I think that was really what I was battling with. And I finally was like, "You know what? I'm gonna make the decision and follow through with it. Be a husband, and you know, this is what I've always wanted. I'm gonna just choose this woman and just do it”.’
The Biebers married in a New York courthouse in September 2018 before wedding again in a church ceremony in South Carolina on September 30.
Two years before marrying his wife, Bieber spoke to GQ about wanting to get married one day, but not wanting to hurt anyone. While the couple didn’t confirm they were an item at the time, the publication noted that the model was present at moments during the interview.
‘I don’t want to put anyone in a position where they feel like I’m only theirs, only to be hurt in the end,’ the crooner said, alluding to a romance with the model.
‘Right now in my life, I don’t want to be held down by anything. I already have a lot that I have to commit to. A lot of responsibilities. I don’t want to feel like the girl I love is an added responsibility. I know that in the past I’ve hurt people and said things that I didn’t mean to make them happy in the moment. So now I’m just more so looking at the future, making sure I’m not damaging them.
‘What if Hailey ends up being the girl I’m gonna marry, right? If I rush into anything, if I damage her, then it’s always gonna be damaged. It’s really hard to fix wounds like that. It’s so hard.… I just don’t want to hurt her.’
On Monday night, Bieber and his wife attended the premiere of his new YouTube show Justin Bieber: Seasons in Los Angeles and couldn’t keep their hands off each other.
Posing for photos together, the singer was seen regularly placing his hands on his wife’s derrière and holding her face to pull her in for a kiss.
For the event, the 22-year-old wore a black sequinned dress with a plunging neckline while her husband kept it more laid back in a pair of pink trousers, a white long-sleeved top, silver chain and a black cap.
In the first episode of Justin Bieber: Seasons, which was released on YouTube Originals on Monday, the model and singer are filmed walking along the streets of his hometown Stratford, Ontario where he grew up.
During the episode, the runway star spoke to camera: ‘Honestly, I feel like I’m here to cheer him on and support him.
‘The last time around, when he was doing the Purpose album, I was around for a lot of that but definitely not as intimately. I love to see him do what he’s so good at. There’s a lot of pressure and there’s a lot of things on artists and musicians specifically that I think people don’t get to see because they’re not around for the full process.’
