Tracksuits have long been considered the most important item from our lockdown wardrobes, but the jumper dress is here to make its case for the title. The ELLE UK team have recently invested in long and slouchy knitted styles and haven't looked back.
The great thing about jumper dresses is their ability to seamlessly blend between work appropriate attire and comfortable for the sofa. Days of sunbathing out of our windows and long evenings on the park filled with M&S cocktails are over. Now that the cold climes have arrived and it's almost dark by lunchtime, there's nothing we need more than being cosy and comfy all day long.
For maximum comfort, a longer length and baggy fit is ideal; it's smart enough to take you through a day of online meetings (we're living on Teams!) and provides a soft and airy feel that's perfect when lounging around the house.
Wear these with socks-n-slides (the bread and butter of lockdown dressing), or pull on some knee-high boots when you're off out on your winter walks.
Jumpers dresses will undoubtedly become the easiest outfit you'll ever wear in winter. Moreover, nobody knows what's going on underneath your look so just throw them on and viola, you're ready for a long day of relaxing in style.
However, short styles are also great for versatility.
Go with bare legs and this season's must-have fashion wellies, classic tights and boots, or wear over trousers to layer up against the cold. Berlin-based designer TRUONGII's patchwork mini is perfect if you feel a little swamped in maxi-length dresses - nobody wants to 'drown' in wool!
Available to buy in all different shapes and sizes, there is absolutely one jumper dress to suit all occasions, as Alicia from AGR Knitwear (loved and worn by Mahalia and Jorja Smith) tells us: 'Knitted dresses are key, especially this vest dress [below] as it's super cosy and sexy. [You] can't beat it!'
Instagram-favourite brands Jacquemus and Hunza-G have given the humble jumper dress a slinky upgrade this season with ribbed styles that cling to the body, halter-neck ties and spaghetti straps favoured by the bloggers everywhere. Snaps to Daniel Lee of Bottega Veneta whose 2019 collections got everyone excited about ribbed knitwear again.
'A knitted dress is super comfortable which is perfect for quarantine! The colour and print is bright and playful too,' says Sunny of House of Sunny on their, now cult status, 'Hockney' dress.
Another recent social media hit has been Paloma Wool's checkerboard knitted vest dress, aka the go-to pattern of summer 2020, which is an upgrade on a 'party-dress' with all the stretchy benefits of knitwear.
If you're still not convinced then think about it like this; you're basically wearing a blanket with sleeves. What more could you want?
