Dandruff is one of those common issues many of us struggle with, yet shy away from speaking about. Having white flakes fall on your black turtleneck has been portrayed in beauty campaigns and adverts as a nightmare, but the reality is that dandruff is super common and doesn't have to prevent you from feeling fabulous in black — or in general. Some cases are mild, and others more severe, but thankfully, with the right regimen, dandruff can be easily controlled.Stephen Pullan, a trichologist at the Philip Kingsley Trichological Clinic in New York, tells Refinery29 that all dandruff doesn't look the same."It can be thought of as dead skin cells shedding off the top layer of the scalp, [which] happens all over the body," he says. "The process can speed up, however, creating visible dandruff, or even worse, [symptoms] such as a bothersome form of flakes that adhere to the hair shaft and can create hair loss."The good news for people living with this annoying issue, however, is that it is treatable — and it starts with finding the right shampoo. "Dandruff shampoos work to decrease flaking, normalise rapid cell turnover, hydrate the scalp, and indirectly decrease itching," dermatologist and Dove hair expert Francesca Fusco, MD, adds.Dermatologist Neil Sadick, MD, of Sadick Dermatology in New York City notes that it's important to pay attention to ingredient labels when shopping for cleansers. "Look for shampoos that have ingredients like ketoconazole or zinc pyrithione," he says. "Both of these are chemical compounds have anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that reduce and prevent fungus growth on the scalp."To help you have a more soothing shampoo experience, we asked the pros for their favourite formulas for ditching dandruff, ahead.Refinery29's selection is purely editorial and independently chosen – we only feature items we love! There are important battles to be won first, of course. Not least in hospital intensive care units and in rolling out a successful vaccination programme. But, if all goes well, within a few weeks many of us will dare to start dreaming about the realities of travel once more. By Easter, the vast majority of those vulnerable to the disease in this country should have been protected. Deaths and hospitalisations from Covid will then have dropped so much that there will – hopefully – be no reason for the Government to prevent us leaving the country and travelling if so we wish. Obviously, we will only be able to visit other countries if and when they decide it is safe to let us in, but some will certainly be keen to see British travellers and holidaymakers back as soon as possible, and there will be many of us who will want to grab the first opportunity to get away and have a break. Currently, politicians are terrified of making commitments – and won’t even look ahead as far as the summer. On Saturday, Grant Shapps was reported as saying that “hadn’t a clue” whether the over 50s should start booking their summer holiday, while Dominic Raab advised against it. We need a better plan than that. So here is our blueprint for restarting travel. Keep the travel industry alive If we are going to travel again, we need the airlines, agents, operators, ferry and rail services which have suffered such a catastrophic loss of income over the last ten months to pull through. Many are now at high risk of collapse and, if significant numbers give up the ghost before spring, it will not only mean many more lost jobs, but a loss of expertise and competition. Consumers will see higher prices and less choice and it could be years before the industry regenerates. Travel is one of the sectors which has been hardest hit by the pandemic; it is a special case which is urgently in need of special support. If the Government can spare tens of millions for, for example, fishermen suffering from Brexit, then it needs to allocate resources to travel, which is a far bigger and more critical industry. Focus on the UK Last year we saw how important UK holidays were during times when it was so much harder to travel abroad. Let’s get self-catering accommodation open again as a priority, and remember that the Easter holidays will be a critical moment for British resorts, hotels, sights and holiday parks. There is some evidence that transmission of the virus in hotels, pubs and bars working under Covid protocols last summer and autumn was relatively low, though Sir Patrick Vallance also expressed concern that the risks weren’t fully understood. By then we should know if the vaccination programme has been successful, and if it has, it is hard to see why the hospitality industry shouldn’t be able to start functioning again.

Prior to being sworn in as the 49th Vice President of the United States — making her the first woman, Black, and South Asian American to hold that title in the history of the Republic — Kamala Harris paid tribute to the 400,000 Americans who have lost their lives to COVID-19. For the occasion, which took place at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, Harris wore a coat designed by New York-based brand Pyer Moss. The Instagram photo shows Harris hand-in-hand with her husband Doug Emhoff, with the then-VP-elect wearing the single-breasted camel coat, featuring an asymmetric shape on the back with cascading pleats running down it. Underneath, she wore a black turtleneck sweater, a matching pleated skirt, and a face mask. A pair of black, knee-high boots accompanied the look. “Though we may be physically separated, we, the American people are united in spirit,” said the caption of the post. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kamala Harris (@kamalaharris) While reposting Harris’ photo, Pyer Moss tagged its creative director, Kerby Jean-Raymond, and Priscella Shum, the vice president of production and design management. According to The Boston Globe series titled A Beautiful Resistance, which highlights Black joy and Black lives, Shum worked with Jean-Raymond to create the Vice President-elect’s outerwear for the eve of Inauguration Day. She also had a hand in designing Cardi B’s head-to-toe Reebok look when she was the global design manager at Reebok Classic. It was at Reebok that she began working with Jean-Raymond, who, in addition to helming his own brand, is also the global creative director at the U.K.-founded sportswear brand. The choice to wear Pyer Moss to the COVID-19 memorial is significant. In March, following New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s announcement that shelter-in-place orders would soon be put into effect, Jean-Raymond was one of the first in fashion to stop production in order to repurpose his studio and offices to donation centres for PPE. The brand also donated $50,000 to support minority- and women-owned small businesses struggling to cover costs due to the pandemic. Jean-Raymond, who is Haitian-American and hails from Brooklyn, is regarded as a symbol of Black success in fashion. He consistently utilises his success to share Black stories and celebrate Black culture through his popular shows during New York Fashion Week and with his long-standing collaboration with Reebok. Despite being a household name in the industry, 2020 brought with it unprecedented wins for the designer. Jean-Raymond’s pieces made it on multiple major magazine covers, including Vanity Fair’s September issue featuring Angela Davis and Zendaya’s InStyle feature that showcased the Euphoria star in only Black designers. In September, he won Harlem’s Fashion Row Designer of the Year award, and the CFDA Award for American Menswear Designer of the Year the very next day. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jonathan Cohen (@jonathancohenstudio) Standing close by Harris and Emhoff at the memorial were then-President-elect Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden. For the occasion, the First Lady-to-be wore a purple coat and dress by New York-based label Jonathan Cohen. The look, according to The New York Times fashion director Vanessa Friedman, is titled “Unity” by the designer, who also made Biden’s mask using recycled materials. The colour purple, which is often regarded in U.S. politics as the symbol of bipartisanship, was often also used during the Women’s Suffrage Movement, along with white and orange. According to the National Park Service, purple is “the colour of loyalty, constancy to purpose, [and] unswerving steadfastness to a cause.” At the time, it also represented freedom and dignity. “Waking up with immense pride and gratitude. Here’s to a new day,” Cohen wrote on Instagram on Wednesday morning. Cohen, an alum of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, focuses much of his attention on sustainability. His namesake brand, which he runs with CEO Sarah Leff and an otherwise small team, does so in part using The Studio, an offset of the brand that repurposes materials from past collections to reduce waste. Their most notable upcycled item — at least for now — is Dr. Biden’s face mask from the memorial, which is available for purchase now at The Studio. Like what you see?
