John Wick 4's alternate credit scene would have solved a big mystery

John Wick 4 spoilers follow.

John Wick 4 director Chad Stahelski has revealed that the original planned end-credits scene in the movie would have solved a mystery that viewers have now been left with.

During John Wick 4, Donnie Yen's Caine tells Akira (Rina Sawayama) that he would be waiting for her revenge after he killed her father. Then, in the film's end-credits scene, Caine approaches his estranged daughter after being released from his duties with the High Table.

But as he moves toward her, a figure emerges in the crowd. That figure is Akira, seeking revenge. Akira is shown holding a blade in her hand before the film ends and cuts to black, meaning audiences never got to find out if she really did get her revenge.

Now, in an interview with Collider, Stahelski has opened up about what he originally panned for that scene.

"It's funny, we shot that, there's a real scene that goes along, like Donnie coming up, you think he's got it, and then Rina goes and gets him, and then there's this whole death scene with Donnie Yen dying," Stahelski said.

"We had a whole thing where you actually see the demise. But we watched it and I kind of felt like, 'Well, that's not as cool as not knowing.' Like, does Rina go down that road? You know, we have John Wick and his demise, and we’re like, 'Well, let's open the door to the new John,' like, 'Who's the new…' And we're like, 'Akira.'"

He continued: "She's got the motivation. She gave John the ultimatum. John chose not to honor that, but he chose to honor something much bigger. So, we had this whole scene and we're like, 'Well, that doesn't really say what we want.'"

Stahelski said that they felt the scene was "too much" and that it was the movie's editor, Nathan Orloff, who suggested to end the scene before Akira actually kills Caine. And Stahelski tried the cut out and decided he loved it so much, he stuck with it.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is out now in cinemas. The previous John Wick movies are available to buy or rent on Prime Video, plus DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD.
