John Mayer has seemingly spoken out to a fan after he received a hateful message amid the ongoing pandemonium following Taylor Swift’s rerelease of Red (Taylor's Version).

Over the weekend the ‘I Bet You Think About Me’ singer released her rerecorded album, which has prompted Swifties to take a look back at her previous romantic relationships with stars like Jake Gyllenhaal and Mayer.

According to E! News, in one screenshot - shared on the Instagram account @deux.discussions - Mayer reportedly responded to a direct message he’d received from one of Swift’s fans who had called him an 'ugly b*tch’.

The validity of the messages between the 44-year-old and fan (who seemingly goes by the deactivated account name @hoeforloyaylor) haven’t been verified, but in the post Mayer appears to state that the fan could screen shot and post the message.

‘F*ck yourself you ugly b*tch I hope you choke on something,’ the fan wrote in the message. When Mayer failed to respond to the message, the fan added: ‘Answer me you b*tch,’

In the screenshot of the message exchange Mayer responded: ‘'I've been getting so many messages like these the past couple days. I'm not upset, I just tend to have a curious mind and feel compelled to ask. Do you really hope that I die?'

The fan subsequently wrote: ‘OMG WHAT I don’t want you to DIE [sic]’, before seemingly leaving a voicenote.

The singer noted ‘It’s okay’, and continued, stating that he wanted to understand why he’d received the messages in the first place.

'So it's a fun thing people are doing without taking into account that I might see it and be affected by it?'

The fan apologised for the messages and noted that she didn’t think he would see them as he is famous.

Mayer and Swift dated in 2009 before splitting a year later. His comments come days after the singer’s Red (Taylor's Version) dropped, which also featured a 13-minute short film inspired by her hit ‘All Too Well’ which Is rumoured to be about her ex Jake Gyllenhaal, whom she dated in 2010.

Swift is currently in a relationship with actor Joe Alwyn while Gyllenhaal is believed to be dating French model Jeanne Cadieu.
