Stop right there! Because John Lewis has finally released its Christmas advert for 2022, and it's everything we could have imagined and more.

Launched this morning (10 November), John Lewis' Christmas advert marks the very beginning of the shopping season, and each year goes on to introduce characters from all walks of life. Back in 2014, they brought Monty the Penguin to our screens, in 2019 the entire nation obsessed over Excitable Edgar (the adorable dragon) and last year we were all talking about schoolboy, Nathan and alien teen, Skye.

But this year's instalment is a little different, instead focusing on a middle-aged man's efforts to prepare for the arrival of his new foster daughter – Ellie – by trying to learn more about her passion for skateboarding.

Titled "The Beginning," and played alongside a cover of Blink-182's 'All The Small Things' by Mike Gieir, a US singer, viewers can watch as man struggles through numerous attempts at trying to learn how to skateboard. Even after some injuries, he perseveres, heading down to the local skatepark, practising at work and watching YouTube videos.

The final scene ends with the man and his wife preparing dinner, when the doorbell rings. Upon answering, they discover it's their social worker, standing with foster child Ellie, who is clutching a skateboard.

The ad ends by saying: "Over 108,000 children in the UK are in the care system.

"We’re making a long-term commitment to support the futures of young people from care."

Holly Kicul, Senior Advertising Manager at John Lewis, said “We could have heavily gone for Christmas magic and fun but that didn’t feel the right thing to do this year with everything going on. It felt the right thing to use this platform we have to get this message [on carers] out. We wanted to have laughter but in a different way to what we do normally.”
