It's never easy dressing for transitional seasons. Or transitional weather for that matter. With rain almost always on the forecast in the near or distant future, it's hard to find a lightweight spring jacket that serves as a fabulous cover up, whilst still looking chic.

And finding a spring jacket that looks like it belongs to an outfit, whilst being light enough if the weather does heat up (should we be so lucky)? Nigh on impossible.

That’s where John Lewis’ ANYDAY brand has come in. With a heavyweight shirt (but still lightweight enough) utility-inspired button-down khaki spring jacket, that customers say ‘goes with anything’.

Why we rate it

The utility-inspired khaki jacket is a classic style that really does go with just about anything. It features a classic button-down front fastening with added patch pockets on the chest as well as a further two at the sides, which give it that jacket-like feel.

Not only is it easy to throw on with denim, it can be worn with skirts and dresses, too for a fuss-free added layer when the temperature starts to drop in the evening.

£38 at John Lewis

A classic style and shape, with the added benefit of being khaki in colour, a neutral of sorts, the patch-pocket jacket would seamlessly fit into any wardrobe, whether you’re a clean-line loving minimalist or a patterns-all-over colour queen.

John Lewis has styled the ANYDAY jacket with a leopard-print shirt, printed slogan white T-shirt and white trainers, but it could just as easily work with a pair of jeans and a vest top for evenings.

The lightweight, 100% cotton would also be ideal for jetting off to sunnier climes. Easily folded into a carry-on suitcase, it goes as easily with white linen trousers and sandals for dinner as it does with a swimsuit as a cover up on the beach.

And what's more? It's available in three different colours: khaki, sky blue and lilac.

What the reviews say

There aren't a whole host of reviews on the John Lewis website just yet, but those that have been posted sing the jacket's praises.

Whilst we think the £38 must-have has an immediate add-to-basket quality, its good to know that this spring jacket holds up in the real world, too.

  • "This is a great 'wear anywhere' jacket. It's lightweight & comfortable, goes with anything & can easily be dressed up or down. I'm really pleased with it."

  • "I love this shirt jacket, the flat discreet pockets on each side are a godsend, I took this away with me to Spain where the weather was changeable so I wore it layered over a jumper and also just over a T-shirt, it was perfect."

  • "Really good quality - can be dressed up or down. Really good colour - definitely recommend."

  • "Absolutely love it, good quality for a reasonable price."

  • "My favourite recent purchase. Good for layering when you don't know what the weather is going to do."
