John Legend made a heartbreaking tribute to his wife Chrissy Teigen as he performed on stage at the Billboard Music Awards last night, following the tragic news of the loss of their baby earlier this month.
Singing his new song 'Never Break', John dedicated the performance to his wife, whispering beforehand, "This is for Chrissy."
The heartfelt performance left John with tears in his eyes, coming just two weeks after the couple announced the deeply sad loss of their baby son, Jack, on Instagram.
The song's already-powerful lyrics seemed to take on new meaning for John in the wake of this tragic news, as he sang:
"We got a good thing, babe. Whenever life is hard. We'll never lose our way. 'Cause we both know who we are."
Billboards host Kelly Clarkson introduced John's "very special performance," also sending her condolences to the couple.
"He [John] and Chrissy just have this warm way of inviting us into their world, the highs and the lows," she said.
"Our hearts go out to you both in this very difficult time and I'm thankful that you continue to share your light and your talent with all of us," Kelly continued, adding at the end of the performance, "John, that was so beautiful… All my love to you and Chrissy."
John and Chrissy announced the loss of their baby mid-way through pregnancy earlier this month, writing on Instagram: "We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough."
Chrissy has since returned to social media following the tragic news.
