Joel Embiid needs surgery on torn ligament in injured finger

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embid has a torn ligament in the left ring finger he injured on Monday against the Oklahoma City Thunder and will require surgery.

The team announced the news on Thursday. He’ll be reevaluated in 1-2 weeks, according to the team.

Embiid suffered the injury in the first quarter on a collision while defending Thunder forward Darius Bazley.

He suffered a gruesome dislocation and left for the locker room after the injury.

Embiid finished game after injury

He returned to finish the game after having his hand wrapped and tallied 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in 32 minutes. He said after the game that he might need to miss Thursday’s contest against the Boston Celtics.

The 76ers ruled him out on Wednesday and announced he would visit a hand specialist. Thursday’s news appears to be the result of that consultation.

The 76ers broke a four-game losing streak with Monday’s win and sit in fifth place in the East with a 24-14 record.

The two-time All-Star is averaging 23.4 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 blocks this season.
