Viewers were left scratching their heads when Joe Lycett appeared to walk off Steph's Packed Lunch after an awkward exchange.

The comedian and presenter Steph McGovern had been having a nice chat with a gardening expert about jazzing up their outdoor spaces.

But things seemed to get a little tense when a picture of the comedian lounging in his own garden was shared on screen.

Keen-eyed McGovern spotted a plastic bottle in the background of the snap - after Lycett had said he had given up using them.

"Isn’t that one of the bottles you said you’d stopped using?" she asked.

Looking slightly taken aback, Lycett quipped: "I didn’t realise I was on Newsnight, Steph.”

There were giggles from the crowd but the star was then seen reaching under his top to take off his microphone.

He then walked off the set, although it wasn't clear whether he was annoyed or maybe having a little joke of his own.

"Ooh that was frosty," said one viewer on Twitter.

"Can’t believe he walked out, very awkward," said another.

"Not a good look Joe," said one person, who suggested the comedian "storm back on and apologise".

"That’s the better way to handle this awkward moment," the viewer advised.

Another person said Lycett was "doing a Piers Morgan", referring to the way the broadcaster walked off Good Morning Britain amid a row over Meghan Markle.

"Not sure what Steph said that warranted that response by him. Comedians dish it out but can’t take it back," the viewer added.

Yahoo has contacted Channel 4 and representatives for Lycett for comment.
