Jesy Nelson under fire from Little Mix fans over controversial new hairstyle

Little Mix fans have been left fuming after seeing bandmate Jesy Nelson’s new hairdo for the first time.

It’s not often that the four-piece girlband make headlines for controversy – aside from last year when disabled fans were left heartbroken when their tour venues had no access and when a deaf mum took concert promoters to court – but it seems that Jesy, 26, has only gone and given us some with something as menial as a new hairstyle.

Last night the singer shared a photo of her red locks in a pretty standard and acceptable picture.

However, that all changed when, within hours of the first upload, she posted one showing off her new hair, obviously pleased with the results.

The dreadlocks immediately angered a lot of people, specifically Mixers, who deemed it offensive due to the cultural appropriation nature of it.

She simply captioned it ‘shootin’ and despite the outcry of offence, it’s still had over 220,000 Likes – and is one of her most well-received snaps of the year so far.

People left an array of comments, but there were plenty of negative ones, too. Some were quick to point out just why her choice of dreadlocks (on a white person) were wrong.

‘Jesy please read these comments and understand why this is wrong,’ one commenter politely wrote.

Replies like ‘Yikes sis,’ ‘Noooooooo,’ and ‘Bruhh cultural appropriation,’ littered the post’s comments section, but in truth there was a huge mixture of negative, positive, and confused people leaving their thoughts.

‘using an oppressed culture as fashion by an oppressor definitely is CA. your definition of CA should include this. it’s the exact same thing only on a smaller scale. a collective societal oppressive system is upheld by individuals endorsing it. so yes, it is cultural appropriation. because this hairstyle can’t be worn by black people on the same terms as it can by white people,’ wrote one.

Others didn’t seem to get the problem or, importantly, understand why it wasn’t a suitable hairstyle to go with. ‘someone can explains to me why this is wrong??? No offense but I really don’t understand the drama,’ one baffled user said.

‘Why cant we have cultural appreciation??’ and ‘carry on being yourself Jesy and you can wear anything you want. You look beautiful! Just ignore the haters jesy,’ viced others in support of the singer’s choice.

Even though fans are demanding she remove the offending photo, it’s remained live for almost 20 hours and continues to rack up the Likes and comments (as mixed as they may be).

Yahoo Celebrity UK has contacted Jesy for comment.
