Jessie James Decker is getting mom-shamed for her daughter's suntan

Country singer and mother of Vivianne Rose, 4, Eric Jr., 2, and newborn son Forrest Bradley, Jessie James Decker has an Instagram account that has 2.9 million followers. She posts lots of family photos, snaps with her husband, Tennessee Titan wide receiver Eric Decker, and updates on her music career, all of which generally receive a positive response from fans.

Her most recent photo, however, stirred up some questions about her parenting skills. Decker posted an adorable photo of Vivianne Rose with a deep suntan that she captioned “Tan Bunny.”

While the majority of comments were positive, quite a few took issue with Vivianne Rose’s suntan.

“Children shouldn’t be tanning. Skin cancer is never a good look,” wrote one.

Another reminded Decker to use protection, writing, “Cute, but don’t forget sunblock ! Very important.”

One shared their own skin cancer story, writing, “She’s gorgeous like her parents. I have Italian skin that tanned and ended up with a melanoma at 40. FYI.”

Some even complimented her golden skin, writing, “her skin is flawless & glowing” and “I’m really hoping my children have the same coloring as her.”

But is a tan safe for a child? Are fans overreacting? In fact, too much unprotected exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause skin damage, eye damage, immune system suppression, and skin cancer, according to the CDC.

There’s no getting around it, tan skin is damaged skin. Any change in the color of your child’s skin after time outside — whether sunburn or suntan — indicates damage from UV rays.

Most experts recommend sunscreen, hats, coverups (like long-sleeve sun shirts), limited time in the sun, and lots of shade for young children.

It’s important to reapply during the day, especially after your kids go swimming or are active, even with waterproof and water-resistant products.

And always remember that kids shouldn’t spend too much time in the sun. It’s good practice to combine sunscreen with other options to prevent UV damage.

However, as any parent knows, the reality of trying to keep kids covered — whether with sunscreen, clothing, or hats — is not always easy. Especially with three kids, on what looks like a family vacation.

The Deckers have been married for five years and star in the E! reality show Eric and Jessie. They are outnumbered by their children, but still appear to have a seamless system in place. In October, Jessie told Yahoo Lifestyle: “He’s so so nurturing, and so sensitive. There’s no gender role when it comes to being mother/father. He’ll do all the mommy stuff. And he doesn’t even have to, but he’s just that amazing. He’ll change every diaper if he has to and he’ll get up in the middle of the night and give Bubby a bottle. He’s just amazing.”
