It’s hard to believe that Jennifer Lopez is on the cusp of turning 50 - the singer and actress appears to be ageing backwards. So, how does J-Lo stay in shape? In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Lopez revealed she kicked things up a notch with a strict eating plan that sounds like our idea of hell.
J-Lo, who is set to play a stripper in the upcoming film Hustlers, revealed she cut out carbs and sugar completely. She released her first onset image from the movie on Instagram and it shows just how hard she's been prepping for the role.
Commenters were highly impressed with her abs, including Lenny Kravitz who commented, "Boom! There it is" and choreographer Travis Wall who asked, "Are you for real? Unbelievable," complete with hearts and prayer emojis. The rest of Instagram agreed.
“I’m getting ready for this movie called Hustlers and I have to play a stripper. I work out a lot, I try to stay healthy but [my trainer] was like ‘let’s do something to move the needle,’” the triple threat told Ellen.
And move the needle, they certainly did.
What is Jennifer Lopez’s diet?
Her eating plan is a no carb and no sugar diet. The star said she was initially sceptical about it when her trainer Dodd Romero proposed the idea.
“That’s most of my diet,” she said on The Ellen Show. “I was like, ‘Completely? Like, cold turkey?’”
Lopez’s personal trainer Romero has trained other celebrities including Denzel Washington, WWE wrestler Big Show and her fiancé Alex Rodriguez. She revealed on Instagram that Rodriguez joined her in solidarity by following the strict diet too - dubbing it the 10-day challenge (much like the 10 year challenge, but not fun at all.)
J-Lo also turned into that friend of yours who wouldn't stop talking about their Dry January, encouraging her followers to join her, “This 10-day challenge is starting to get lonely, so we’re challenging YOU! Join us.”
J-Lo told Ellen, “You feel like you’re in an alternate reality or universe [when you’re on the eating plan], like you’re addicted and you think about it all the time.”
“It was really hard in the beginning... I was like, ‘It’s only ten days. Come on, you can do this.’ It gets a little hard in the middle and then by the end, you’re okay,” she said.
“When you go back to the sugar you don’t want it as much," she said. "It’s something you get used to a little bit. It takes down the inflammation a little bit so all of a sudden you start feeling like really small and less swollen almost, and it feels good. And then you get addicted to that feeling too... I was like, you know what, I want to do it again. I wanted to do it again.”
After they had finished the diet, Rodriguez posted a celebratory junk food dinner the couple shared on Instagram. The spread included three pizzas, a mountain of chicken wings, a crate of chips and various desserts.
Why was Jennifer Lopez on Ellen Degeneres' show?
Lopez was on the show to talk about her performance at the Grammys, in which she, Ne-Yo and Smokey Robinson joined forces in a tribute to Motown.
The tribute had mixed reviews, with critics arguing that the decision to have J.Lo lead the tribute was inappropriate. “Jennifer Lopez is doing the Motown tribute and when Janelle Monáe is right there and I just don’t understand the creative decision” one Twitter user wrote.
Lopez also talked about her new film Hustlers, which has just been announced. She is set to star alongside Crazy Rich Asians’ Constance Wu in Hustlers, a film inspired by an article called The Hustlers at Scores which was described as a "modern Robin Hood story" by The Cut. The piece was characterised by Variety as a tale about "a crew of savvy former strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients."
How to do the Instagram #10daychallenge
The only part of the 10 Day Challenge that appeals to us is the junk food bit at the end.
But if you do want to do it, the rules appear to be pretty simple: no carbs and no sugar for 10 days. Good luck.
