Jennifer Lopez diet plan and workout: How the Hustlers star prepared for her demanding physical role

It’s hard to believe that Jennifer Lopez just turned 50 - the singer and actress appears to be ageing backwards in her new film Hustlers. So, how does J-Lo stay in shape? With a lot of discipline, a strict eating plan and some of the most intense workouts we’ve ever seen - on top of her high-intensity performances on tour.

J-Lo, who plays a veteran stripper named Ramona in the film, revealed she cut out carbs and sugar completely while on The Ellen Show. After releasing her first onset image from the movie on Instagram earlier this year, she proved just how hard she was working for the role with her personal pole dancing coach for the film revealing she made sure she “had a pole in any city she was in”.

“I’m getting ready for this movie called Hustlers and I have to play a stripper. I work out a lot, I try to stay healthy but [my trainer] was like ‘let’s do something to move the needle,’” the triple threat told host Ellen DeGeneres.

And move the needle, they certainly did.

What is Jennifer Lopez’s diet?

Her eating plan is a no carb and no sugar diet. The star said she was initially sceptical about it when her trainer Dodd Romero proposed the idea.

“That’s most of my diet,” she said on The Ellen Show. “I was like, ‘Completely? Like, cold turkey?’”

Lopez’s personal trainer Romero has trained other celebrities including Denzel Washington, WWE wrestler Big Show and her fiancé Alex Rodriguez. She revealed on Instagram that Rodriguez joined her in solidarity by following the strict diet too - dubbing it the 10-day challenge (much like the 10 year challenge, but not fun at all.)

J-Lo also turned into that friend of yours who wouldn't stop talking about their Dry January, encouraging her followers to join her, “This 10-day challenge is starting to get lonely, so we’re challenging YOU! Join us.”

J-Lo told Ellen, “You feel like you’re in an alternate reality or universe [when you’re on the eating plan], like you’re addicted and you think about it all the time.”

“It was really hard in the beginning... I was like, ‘It’s only ten days. Come on, you can do this.’ It gets a little hard in the middle and then by the end, you’re okay,” she said.

“When you go back to the sugar you don’t want it as much," she said. "It’s something you get used to a little bit. It takes down the inflammation a little bit so all of a sudden you start feeling like really small and less swollen almost, and it feels good. And then you get addicted to that feeling too... I was like, you know what, I want to do it again. I wanted to do it again.”

After they had finished the diet, Rodriguez posted a celebratory junk food dinner the couple shared on Instagram. The spread included three pizzas, a mountain of chicken wings, a crate of chips and various desserts.

Lopez also revealed some of the things that she eats in a day to Good Housekeeping, which include starting the day off right with oatmeal and berries or a protein shake blended with more berries, Greek yoghurt, honey, cinnamon and ice.

Later on in the day, she’ll have a salad for lunch with examples being a salmon salad packed with zucchinis, bell peppers, broccoli and sprinkled with vinaigrette, or a kale salad with pumpkin seeds, queso, minced shallots and lemon juice-olive oil dressing. If she’s feeling peckish, she’ll turn to healthy treats like nuts and fresh fruits or veggies.

She also opts for an early dinner at 6.30pm and has lean proteins, as well as veggies and carbs such as rice and sweet potatoes.

What is J-Lo’s workout routine?

Lopez recently announced that she and her fiancee A-Rod would be releasing their workout plans on an app called Fitplan, sharing a glimpse into their routine in teaser videos online. In it, Lopez is seen weight lifting, using machines such as a lat pull down and leg curl devices and doing kettlebell swings. Her full routine can be seen on the app, which is a paid-for service.

Ahead of Hustlers, Lopez was also touring with her ‘It’s My Party Tour’ and had to fit in pole dancing training around that. Sapakie, her pole trainer, revealed that Lopez had the most intense training out of everyone in the cast as she had to convince the audience she was a seasoned stripper as her character Ramona - which meant the pair trained two to three times a week in six inch heels, on top of Lopez’s personal training programme and performances.

“That was the point of making sure she had a pole in any city she was in. And I would go to her wherever she was at, so that within for a crazy busy schedule, we would lock out a pole training,” Sapakie said.

Sapakie continued, “Jennifer has a really intense workout regimen, but then often we would go to the gym together. She has a personal trainer that was also working with her. Plus, she was working on her tour the whole time, so she's constantly moving”

In her Fitplan video, Lopez also revealed that on the days that she isn’t performing on tour, she takes a break. She said, “When I don’t have a show, I don’t do anything. I just rest.”

All her hard work appears to have paid off as Lopez is being hailed for her role in Hustlers, with some predicting that she could nab an Oscar nomination as a result.

Lopez is still on her "It's My Party Tour," so she's dancing and singing her way across the U.S. right now before she heads abroad next week, starting in Israel.

She celebrated 50 with a steamy video on Instagram and captioned it, "#MOOD... Bc tomorrow’s my birthday!!!!! #leoseason #itsmypartytour #july24 Feeling #happiness #gratitude #love"

She wasn't the only one celebrating though - her fiance, Alex Rodriguez posted a sweet montage tribute to her for her big day as well. Lopez responded in the comments, "I’m crying....I love our life...I love you so much... thank you my beautiful Macho..."
