It’s a rare moment in life when you find yourself praying for Jennifer Hudson to throw a shoe at you.

Sure, explaining to an A&E doctor that you wanted to be impaled with the heel of a Christian Louboutin stiletto might be out of the ordinary, but the 39-year-old assures us that when her footwear is flying in your direction to always take it as a compliment.

‘It’s truly an expression of appreciation. It’s equivalent to a standing ovation,’ she explains to ELLE UK during a game of Ask Me Anything.

'You know I have had a shoe and many other things thrown at me... I auditioned for Barry Manilow years ago for his tour but in that audition, as I finished performing, they threw everything they had at me off of the table. And they were like "oh my God, that audition was amazing", and then they said "we have nothing for you though, thank you for coming!".'

If anyone deserves a standing ovation (or a good shoe lobbing) right about now it’s Hudson. Since coming seventh in 2004's American Idol, the Chicago-born actor has starred in the likes of Sex and the City, Sing, Cats and Dreamgirls, the latter of which earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2007.

'What is my favourite memory of working with Beyoncé on Dreamgirls? Everything!' she tells us.

'Beyoncé and Destiny's Child is like my favourite female group, right? Then Jamie Foxx was my favourite male artist and I got to work with both of them on my first film! And the best part of working with Beyoncé was getting to work with her every day. And to be in a group - technically we were in a group together.'

With syrupy effortless vocals and an on-screen presence that ignites a fire in your belly, it’s no wonder the late Aretha Franklin personally requested Hudson to play her in the up-coming biopic about the Queen of Soul’s life.

That said, if it came down to Hudson to choose who’d star alongside her as a muse in the upcoming Disney live-action adaptation of Hercules– in which she’s rumoured to play Calliope, FYI – she says: ‘I’m good at casting, I want you to know!’ Her top picks? Kelly Rowland, Ariana Grande, Lizzo, H.E.R and Normani, of course.

Hudson even spilled the beans on what Rihanna smells like, her favourite British sayings and how to be more J-Hud.

Respect is out in cinemas in the UK now.
