Jennifer Aniston’s Instagram account has broken Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s world record for gaining the most followers in the shortest space of time.

The 50-year-old star, best known for starring as Rachel in ‘Friends’, joined Instagram on Tuesday this week.

She marked her debut on the platform by sharing an image of herself together with her five fellow Friends co-stars, including close friends Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow.

The account appeared with a blue tick to show it was “verified” and definitely associated with the star, rather than being one of her many fan accounts on the platform.

While the post itself has received over 12 million likes at time of writing, it has crucially broken the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s record for gaining followers.

The royal pair gained one million followers in just six hours when they launched their joint Instagram account, @SussexRoyal, in April this year.

But Aniston surpassed this feat, gaining the same number of followers in just under five hours and 45 minutes. The record was announced on the Guinness World Records website yesterday evening.

The moment was chronicled in a video shared by Twitter user Neil Vorderman.

Aniston’s arrival on Instagram on Tuesday evening also saw the platform temporarily crash.

She marked the event by sharing a second post yesterday evening, this time of her looking at her phone before throwing it down in jest.

“I swear I didn’t mean to break it,” she captioned the image.

The most-followed Instagram account in the world is currently Instagram itself, followed by footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.

As for other Instagram records, the Guinness World Record for the most-liked post on the platform is currently held by an egg. The @world_record_egg’s first Instagram post – later revealed to be part of a mental health campaign – boasts almost 54 million likes at time of writing.
