Jenna Dewan has spoken about the 'joyful new place' she's experiencing in life, a year and a half after splitting from husband Channing Tatum.

The actress and dancer, who met Tatum in the 2006 film Step Up, now happily co-parents daughter Everly with her former spouse and has found love with Tony award-winning actor Steve Kazee. Last month, the couple announced that they are expecting their first child together.

'It was a hard journey of growth and change,' she tells People of how her life altered after the separation. 'Ultimately, now I can honestly say that I'm living in a very joyful new place in my life and I'm happy about it.'

In the interview, Dewan reflects on the end of her high-profile nine-year marriage, speculating on what might have led to its demise, readily admitting: 'I always say no one gets married to hopefully get divorced.'

'People grow and they change and sometimes they don't grow and change together,' she says. 'So it wasn't an overnight thing that happened. There was no one event. I think it was just a slow realisation that we wanted different things.'

Dewan says at the time she was 'gutted' when her marriage broke down, finding it especially hard because she was so young when she first began a relationship with the Magic Mike star.

'It was so difficult for me,' she says. 'It was the loss of an idealistic future for myself and my life. What does that now look like for me? Where do I begin? I met him when I was 24, I didn't know life without Chan.'

Ultimately, the 38-year-old learned from the divorce that 'embracing' unexpected life changes can mark an opportunity to reassess what they want.

'Embracing it and starting fresh and figuring out what you want in life and what means a lot to you, what's meaningful and what is going to make you happy,' she reflects to the magazine. 'I'm grateful that I now am at a place where I understand myself and what I want and I'm happy about this new chapter.'

Dewan and Tatum now have an amicable relationship, with Dewan saying their divorce 'doesn't take away from the love that we had or shared for all those years'.

Since the split, Tatum has started a relationship with British singer Jessie J and has reportedly settled in the UK with her.
