Jamie Dornan's new film Belfast is on the way: Here's all the info on the trailer, release date and cast

Jamie Dornan's about to be back on our screens once again, this time in new coming-of-age film Belfast, which tells the story of a young boy growing up in late 60s Northern Ireland.

He's joined by none other than Judi Dench, plus some more huge names, and the film is already set to be a poignant emotional rollercoaster. So, here's everything we know about Belfast so far...

What is Belfast about?

Belfast is set in the Northern Irish capital (as the title suggests) in 1969. It follows young boy Buddy and his family through the start of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, as tensions rise and the family struggle to decide whether to stay in Belfast or to leave.

Directed and produced by Kenneth Branagh, it's also thought to be inspired by his own early life growing up in the city.

Is there a Belfast trailer?

Yes! The trailer was released back in September, featuring the main cast members (including Jamie Dornan, Judi Dench, Caitriona Balfe, Ciarán Hinds and Colin Morgan) in a series of black and white and colour scenes.

Plus, there's even a clip of Jamie Dornan singing 'Everlasting Love' - which he actually performed at the film's premiere this week - and, yep, he's officially a man of many talents.

Have a watch of the trailer here:

When will Belfast be released?

There's still a little while to wait for this one, unfortunately. Belfast will be released in UK cinemas on 21 January 2022 - so at least that's something look forward to for the New Year.

It's not yet been announced whether Belfast will be available on any streaming platforms, though it will likely appear online at some point following its cinema release.

Belfast cast: Who is starring in Belfast?

There's a star-studded lineup for this one. The Belfast cast includes Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan who plays the unnamed 'Pa', while Outlander's Caitriona Balfe plays 'Ma'. The pair's fictional son Buddy is played by Jude Hill.

Plus, there's Judi Dench as Granny and Ciarán Hinds as Pop, while Merlin's Colin Morgan also stars.

Jamie Dornan is Northern Irish in real life, growing up in the suburbs of Belfast, so we're set to hear his real accent in this new role too. Let's remind ourselves of Jamie singing at the film's premiere once more...

What have the cast said about Belfast?

Discussing the project in December 2020, Jamie told The Hollywood Reporter: "It's very exciting. I probably can't say too much about it, but it's about the city that I'm from, Belfast. That's also the city that [director] Ken Branagh is from. And what I think I'm allowed to say is that it somewhat chronicles a part of Ken's early life in Belfast.

"Judi Dench plays my mother, and Ciarán Hinds plays my father. Caitriona Balfe also plays my wife, and there are a couple of young, brilliant actors in there. We got to shoot it during the pandemic, which was weird. We got Covid tests every day, and everyone was wearing masks."

He added, "It's tonally something very different than anything that anybody's seen me in before, and yeah, I'm really excited."
