James May gives current 'Top Gear' presenters his seal of approval: 'They're almost as good as us'

James May has voiced his approval for the current Top Gear presenting line-up four years after he stepped down from the show alongside Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson.

The trio parted ways with the BBC show in 2015 and the car programme has since gone through a few combinations of presenters.

As he appeared on Good Morning Britain today May confirmed he watched and enjoyed the show before asking: "Am I allowed to say that? I like car shows."

Top Gear is currently fronted by Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris who made their debut together earlier this year.

Paddy McGuinness, Chris Harris and Freddie Flintoff, as Top Gear's launch episode with new presenters Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness pulled in an average overnight audience of 2.5 million viewers, the BBC has said.

May shared: "I think they're at the point ... they're almost as good as us, it's amazing. I know Chris Harris quite well anyway, I've known him for 30 years probably.

"So I like it, and I like watching car shows, I don't see why it's a problem to have two big car shows."

Prior to the current incarnation of presenters, it was hosted by Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc for one series with occasional appearances made by Harris, Rory Reid, Sabine Schmitz, and Eddie Jordan.

Evans left after the 23rd series while LeBlanc remained to host alongside Harris and Reid as the show's core presenters for three more series before Flintoff and McGuinness took over.

May, Clarkson and Hammond went on to star in The Grand Tour with Amazon Prime, with its fourth series set for release on 13 December.

The three did however get into a spot of bother earlier in the year when they ended up stranded 500 miles away from their crew.

After the trio opted to travel in the cargo plane, they ended up stuck on the wrong island when their means of transport broke down and Clarkson wasted no time in sharing their plight on Twitter.
