ITV1's Out There full cast list as Martin Clunes stars in Welsh-made drama
Martin Clunes is back on our screens in a very different role to the grumpy but loveable Dr Martin we are most used to seeing him play. He is now starring in the new ITV1 thriller Out There, which was filmed in Wales.
Playing a farmer confronted with dark forces creeping into his rural community Martin will be joined by an impressive Welsh cast for the series. The drama depicts the surreptitious invasion of the land our farmer cherishes, with devastating consequences, as his livelihood, homestead, and family life are threatened by local county lines drug dealers: urban gangs using the British countryside as a field of operations, moving drugs and money between their inner-city hubs and provincial areas.
The drama was filmed in Wales and has a Welsh director, Marc Evans, who created and co-wrote the show, as well as a strong Welsh cast. Out There begins at 9pm on Sunday, January 18, on ITV1 and here is the full cast list for the series.

Martin Clunes as Nathan Williams
Martin Clunes plays Nathan Williams, a man who runs a farm which has been in his family for generations, caught in a numbing rhythm of work and grief following the death of his wife, Sabine, two years previously. A single parent to teenager Johnny, Nathan is uniquely placed and possesses enough pent-up energy to take on the gangs that threaten to engulf his son.
Consequently he embarks on a personal journey that will take him ever further out of his comfort zone into a dark alternative world as he fights to protect his family, his homestead, and his legacy. He’s missed all the clues that the country idyll around him has been fatally compromised, contaminated by waves of criminality spreading and mutating virus-like from the city.
Now Nathan must accept that the rustic atmosphere of his childhood is long gone, replaced by something altogether more perilous. And the only way for Nathan to survive in this brave new world is to learn the rules and fight back.
Martin is best known for playing Dr Martin Ellingham in the long-running series Doc Martin, which ended in 2022. He has also turned his hand to more sinister roles including playing DCI Colin Sutton in the Manhunt series.
Louis Ashbourne Serkis as Johnny Williams
Louis Ashbourne Serkis is playing Johnny Williams. Johnny, son of Nathan Williams, is a thoroughly good kid, very good-hearted and loyal, a tad sensitive and is not overly confident. He’s recently lost his mother and is still trying to process all of that. Johnny in some ways is just a regular teenager. He is into his sports, a keen computer gamer, and he is an accomplished swimmer.
He has a strong friendship with Sadie who is his best and pretty much only friend. She has a brother called Rhys who is slightly older.
Johnny knows that Rhys is into dodgy things but is not too aware of what takes place. He only hears it through Sadie. What happens is that Rhys asks Johnny to mind a package for him.
Then this package mysteriously goes missing, which causes Johnny stress and confusion. He blames Eva, the cleaner, for taking it when in actual fact Rhys was the one who took the package to make out that Johnny is now in debt to him so that he can now get Johnny to pay him back by doing other missions.
Rhys really tries to exploit him because he sees that Johnny is slightly weak in that sense. That ultimately leads to Nathan getting involved because he finds out what has happened from Eva.
Johnny does keep things from Nathan but he can’t hide this. The package is the catalyst. Louis is best known for his role as Alex in the 2019 fantasy adventure film The Kid Who Would Be King. He has also appeared in the Netflix hit The Queen's Gambit.
Mark Lewis Jones as Caleb Williams
Mark Lewis Jones is playing Caleb Williams who is Nathan's brother. Caleb always felt he was the brother not taken seriously.
The brother who was left out and lost his way a bit. Then he went into the Royal Marines and saw a lot of action. There has been a family feud going on for some time between the brothers.
Caleb was bought out of the farm by Nathan but Caleb feels it wasn’t done properly and that he wasn’t given enough money. There is a bad feeling between them.
Drug dealers in big cities send young people out to much smaller towns and sell drugs for them, and open new avenues of business, and Johnny gets involved. It ends up in him being in a situation where someone gets killed.
Caleb gets called in to help out because Nathan has no idea what to do about the situation and they dispose of the body together. The incident brings the two brothers together a bit.
Mark is a Welsh actor who is known for his roles in Men Up, The Way, Baby Reindeer, and The Crown. In 2016 Jones won a Bafta Cymru award for best actor in the 2015 film The Passing / Yr Ymadawiad.
Natalia Kostrzewa as Eva Bartosz
Eva, played by Natalia Kostrzewa, is a bit of mystery and you don’t know too much about her background until the later episodes where it is revealed that she had a bad relationship and that she came to England in pursuit of her ex-boyfriend who owed her a lot of money. It is never explained why bad things have happened back in Poland and why she didn’t go back and stay there.
It is quite particular that she decided to go to rural Wales. She has a 10-year-old son and she doesn’t have the best relationship with her mother who has quite an overpowering personality and is looking after her son in Poland.
On one hand she is happy that someone is truly taking care of her child but on the other hand she’s losing the grasp of being a mother which is quite painful. Eva cleans Nathan's house and becomes entangled in the county drugs line story.
Natalia has starred in another Welsh-made drama, Life and Death in the Warehouse, and also the Netflix series Fool Me Once. Speaking about what attracted her to the role Natalia said: "As an eastern European actor it is so difficult to get a really meaty part. Usually eastern European characters are so stereotypical.
"In a way there’s nothing wrong with Eva being stereotypical as a cleaner. But there is a full arc of her character through the six episodes where most eastern European characters have just one or two scenes. This role was a big hallelujah for me."
Carly-Sophia Davies as Sadie Simpson
Playing Sadie Simpson is Carly-Sophia Davies. Sadie is a 16-year-old girl who lives with her older brother Rhys, and they have grown up in a really difficult background.
Their mother has gone off the rails and they don’t know where she is. Their father is very violent and is in prison. So Sadie has been in and out of foster care for years.
She has been back living with her brother who is 18, old enough to be her legal guardian, and they live together in a very difficult dynamic. He is quite possessive and protective over her, and in a way her to him too, and Sadie also gets drawn into the drugs storyline.
Carly-Sophia, who is from Port Talbot, is known for The Eternal Daughter and Midsomer Murders but Out There is her first major role in a TV series. Speaking about the series, Carly-Sophia said: "When I got the job – I have never taken a character through six episodes and I wanted to do it justice – I was really excited but also incredibly nervous.
"ITV, Martin Clunes, brilliant people and script, Marc Evans the director, Ed Whitmore, the writer – I loved Manhunt. I was: 'Wow, this is major' but I tried to put a lot of trust in myself as well and know that I can do it. It was nice to know that they believed in me as well."
Gerran Howell as Rhys Simpson
Playing Rhys Simpson is Gerran Howell. Rhys Simpson is a 19-year-old from a working-class background and he has been through the wringer. For the latest TV and showbiz news sign up to our newsletter.
He has dropped out of school and is now overseeing a county lines drugs operation in this little area of Brecon. Rhys is a bit rough around the edges. He has a big mouth and his actions definitely lead to a lot of chaos unfolding in the story.
Gerran is from Penarth and is known for playing the title role of the CBBC series Young Dracula, which was also filmed in Wales. His other credits include the film 1917 and the TV series Ludwig.
Speaking about filming in Wales Gerran said: "Being in Wales was good fun. I haven’t had the opportunity to work in Wales for a long time. I am from Wales and this was filmed literally 20 minutes down the road from my parents so I was able to see a bit more of them. Working with a Welsh crew and having a Welsh accent brought something out of me – I became patriotic all of a sudden. I felt very Welsh when I was working on this show. It was great. It made me proud to be Welsh."
