Brenda Blethyn will star as Vera for the very last time, marking an end to the ITV show's impressive 13-year run. And fans are eager to know how the British crime drama will conclude.

The television series is based on the Vera Stanhope novel series, written by Ann Cleeves, which follows the life of the nearly-retired detective chief inspector in the fictional Northumberland and City Police. The series began in 2011 and a three-part series was last released in January 2024. Since the last series aired, it was announced that the show was renewed for its fourteenth series, but that this would be the last one. When is Vera's series 14 release date?

Vera's final ever series - series 14, will compromises of two bumper-length episodes. One episode will air on New Year's Day (Wednesday, January 1) at 8pm on ITV and ITVX, while the second episode will air on Thursday, January 2, also at 8pm on ITV and ITVX. They will run for two-hours each.

Who will be starring in this series of Vera?

It probably goes without saying that Brenda Blethyn will be reprising her role as the main character, DCI Vera Stanhope. She began playing the role since the show's inception back in 2011. Meanwhile, actor David Leon will be returning as Joe Ashworth, Rhiannon Clements will reprise her role as Detective Steph Duncan and former Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati will be returning as Chief Superintendent Khalon.

Additionally, Riley Jones will return as DC Mark Edwards, Sarah Kameela Impey as Dr Paula Bennett and Jon Morrison as DC Kenny Lockhart.

On IMDb, the synopsis for episode one series 14, which is titled as 'Inside', reads: "DCI Vera Stanhope investigates the murder of a young man found near a river. As she unravels the case, a complex web of relationships, secrets, and deceit emerges, leading her to question any deeper motives behind the death."

Meanwhile, the synopsis for episode two series 14, which is titled as 'The Dark Wives', reads: "A body is found near local stones called The Dark Wives. Vera investigates the murder of a bright young student, uncovering connections to her childhood memories. Past and present intertwine as she solves the case in an emotional farewell."
