This Italian town is the prettiest of all lakeside towns
With buildings painted in rainbow colours on the shores of Lake Garda, Limone sul Garda is an Italian gem that enchants visitors with its photogenic location and delightful atmosphere.
The picturesque town is located in the Brescia region of Italy, on the western shore of glorious Lake Garda in the Italian lakes. And while Lake Garda has more than its fair share of heavenly towns (not least Riva at the lake's northern end and Sirmione to the south), dreamy little Limone sul Garda vies for the crown of the prettiest town in Lake Garda — perhaps even in the whole of Italy.
VISIT LIMONE SUL GARDA WITH CL
True to its name, Limone sul Garda is renowned for its vibrant lemon groves (we’re fans of this zesty citrus fruit for everything from cleaning to baking), and you can pay a visit to the old lemon houses, the limonaia, to find out more about the town's lemon-growing legacy.
Limone sul Garda is a town that steals our hearts. It's the perfect size for exploring on foot, meandering up the cobblestone hills where bright bougainvillaea spills from the balconies of vibrantly painted buildings. There's a buzz in the air, helped by locals and holidaymakers sipping coffee while they people watch from quaint tables and chairs set outside family-run trattorias in the town. And the lakeside scene is just as lovely, with an atmospheric promenade that makes the most of the views and a handful of gorgeous pebbly beaches.
Around the old town, Limone sul Garda's lemons are celebrated in the bars and restaurants. There are plenty of lemony pasta dishes to try, accompanied by sweet lemonade, or you can finish a meal with a flourish of limoncello. But that’s not all. The streets are marked with handpainted signage adorned with a fruit motif, and you’ll spot them as you amble along the cobblestones.
VISIT LIMONE SUL GARDA THIS SPRING
The idyllic lake-and-mountain scenery around Limone sul Garda can be enjoyed from all sorts of vantage points, whether that’s the beaches lapped by the cool and clear lake, a waterside pizzeria, or the sensational elevated promenade that clings to the contours of Lake Garda. It's up to you whether you take a gentle walk along the walkway or hire a bike to cover more ground.
Of course, you can't visit Limone sul Garda without finding out more about its lemon-growing past. From the boats that crisscross Lake Garda, it's easy to spot the white stone pillars of the old lemon houses between Limone sul Garda and nearby Gargnano, strategically positioned to face the sun. These pillars once supported winter covers for the fruits, shielding the lemons from the cool winds.
And while the region's lemon-growing heyday is behind it (Sicily's climate proved to be better for lemons), there's still some small-scale production in Limone Sur Garda, and you can visit the old lemon houses at Limonaia del Castel, Limonaia del Tesol, and Limonaia of Villa Boghi to get a sense of the past.
