Isabel Marant has relaunched her iconic wedge sneaker
If you needed more evidence that the 2000s and 2010s are starting to influence what we wear today, here's some – Isabel Marant has relaunched her iconic wedge sneaker, giving new life to a shoe that dominated the trends at the beginning of the last decade.
The designer – who first released the Bekett trainer almost exactly 10 years ago – has today launched the Balskee, a new take on the very famous wedge trainer, which has been adapted to have more volume and a higher heel.
The shoe is very heavily influenced by the original, which was one of the 'it' shoes of the Noughties. It gained cult status when Beyoncé famously wore a pair in her Love On Top music video, while Rihanna, Gisele Bündchen and Kendall Jenner (and pretty much every fashion editor on the front row) also picked up a pair. In fact, the French fashion house sold 200,000 units of the shoe worldwide and, at times, there were huge waiting lists for the style.
Deciding to reinvent one of her most popular designs came about because she had never really put them away, the designer explained in a press release.
"I’ve never stopped wanting to wear them," she said. "The most comfortable things are the things you will always wear and that you are never fed up with."
Marant believes that it is this comfort that will encourage shoppers to embrace the style once again, particularly after the lockdowns many of us have had to live through this past year.
"Everybody is really into this coziness situation," the designer told the New York Times. "They are not ready to wear pointy-heeled shoes. Maybe to go to dance, but then you will be better off to bring sneakers in your bag."
She might have a point, Balenciaga did just release a stiletto Croc, suggesting there may well be an appetite for a very comfortable take on the high heel – and, if not, the reissuing of a cult piece from recent fashion history sends a great message about digging back out some of your past favourites. Hey, if Isabel Marant can do it, so can you.
