Women achieve a lot more these days whether it’s getting a degree, a high paid successful job or buying their first home. So why is marriage still considered a big achievement? This is an interesting question that most women today will ask compared to the 1950s

It’s strange to think that in today’s society people will still say that you are more successful if you are married. The family norm has definitely changed now compared to a decade ago and more people, including myself, are having children out of wedlock. Some people may decide to never get married as they don’t see it as a part of their life plan. Does this mean they are unsuccessful until they share a last name?

Today women are: entrepreneurs, teachers, doctors, writers, researchers, consultants and much more. Women are attending university and are graduating with bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees. Women are becoming more and more successful, including a new female Prime Minister in the UK and there might be a female President sometime in the future.

Many of these women could be married, but how does this define how successful you are? Women aren’t defined by their last names, especially in society today where some women even keep their own last name even when married.

What happens to the women who haven’t got married yet but are in long loving relationships, passed school, have a degree or two and have had children?

What happens to the single parents who have done everything to look after their children including holding down a job, passed school or got a degree. Does this make them less of a success?

This generation is very different compared to ones that have go before it. There are a lot more people putting their careers first and becoming successful. Our generation should celebrate every success especially to those who have worked hard for years to achieve their goals.

Being married is a great thing to many and everyone should be able to celebrate the happy couple on their engagement or marriage. However it would be nice to also celebrate women who have done amazing things and have been able to become successful in their own right.

Success comes in many different ways to different people, and some success may not be spoken about as much as an engagement but it should still be considered a big deal, the same way a marriage is. Marriage is a still a big achievement however it’s not the only big achievement people should celebrate.
