100-year-old model Iris Apfel showcases her playful H&M collection
At 100 years old, Iris Apfel is still just getting started.
The former interior designer rose to fame late in life after decorating the White House under various administrations with her husband, Carl Apfel. Her contract with the White House oversaw various restoration projects and spanned nine presidencies.
But it was her own eclectic and flamboyant personal style for which Iris Apfel became most recognised. In retirement, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City premiered an exhibition about Apfel's style.
The clothing and accessories exhibit, entitled Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel, was the museum's first time showcasing an exhibition on a living person who wasn't a designer, and her legacy doesn’t stop there.
In 2018 she published a biography with Harper Collins entitled Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon.
In 2019, at the age of 97, she signed a modelling contract with global agency IMG. And now, at 100, Iris Apfel is bringing her signature eclecticism to a wider audience.
In celebration of her 100th birthday, on August 29, 2021, Iris has collaborated with Swedish retailer H&M to bring her unique flair and more-is-more aesthetic to a playful mix of textures, patterns and cuts.
“I think H&M is fabulous and is an absolute pioneer in its field – which I love!” said Apfel in a press release. “I love doing high style at affordable prices, which H&M has mastered!”
Expect bold prints, vibrant hues in voluminous silhouettes, with plenty of embellishments including ruffles, pearls, beads and bows. Flowers, fringes and frogs cover suits, coats, dresses, and silk PJ style sets.
A personal favourite – a ruffled organza tulle jacket in vibrant violet – is indicative of the entire collection: a fabulously flamboyant celebration of over-the-top fashion.
The collection launches online at hm.com and in stores in the UK on March 31.
