For autumn/winter 2020, the catwalks were awash with glamour. From excessive fringing to dramatic red dresses and even an opera glove or two, the runways were filled with plenty of head-turning trends that were built for making an entrance. Yet, within all this, perhaps the most prevalent footwear trend of all was the humble welly boot, certainly an unexpectedly practical and sensible offering in comparison to much else in the collections, but one which came from designers across the board.
Seen at Balenciaga, Prada, Dior, Bottega Veneta and Versace, among others, the clunky rain boot had an undeniable moment on the catwalk. And, although the designs were given something of a high-fashion makeover, and were certainly styled in glamorous ways, the basic design stayed the same: each pair was chunky, comfy and waterproof.
And, thankfully, this trend does not appear to be a one-season wonder with the spring catwalks also featuring wellies aplenty, everywhere from Celine to Ganni. Influencers meanwhile have jumped at the comfortable trend, pairing their clunky boots with cycling shorts, skirts and floaty dresses, showing off their versatility all over Instagram.

And now, supermodel Irina Shayk has stepped out in a pair, making the strongest case yet for why, trends aside, this is the perfect time to invest in a high-fashion wellington boot.
This week, while out in a rainy New York City, Shayk teamed her all-black ensemble with Burberry raincoat and a pair of beige wellies by Chanel, putting a very luxe spin on a genuinely practical outfit. And she wasn't done there. A few days later, the model was seen running errands with her young daughter in tow wearing yet another pair of practical rain boots, these black chunky-soled wellies which she wore with a patent coat and a grey hoodie.
With winter now in full swing and the drizzly British weather here to dampen our daily lockdown walks, we can think of no better investment for the months ahead. As a style that you can excuse yourself for splurging on thanks to their pure practicality, but one which will undoubtedly improve your day (and your outfit) each time you put them on, we think the fashion welly actually might just be the best thing to come out of 2020.
Below, we round up the best high-fashion welly boots to consider adding to your autumn/winter wardrobe. Wear now with your cosiest knits and waterproof coats – and bring them out next spring styled with shorts and a waistcoat a la Kate Moss at Glastonbury.
