Interior designer reveals how to make Target pillows look ‘a million times’ more expensive
Target and throw pillow enthusiasts, listen up: With cozy season fast approaching, interior designer Sophia Lee (@bysophialee) is sharing how to level up your pillow game.
Her tip comes with other ideas for finding affordable home decor that looks way pricier than it is.
“I promise you it will look a million times more expensive and it will change the look of your entire living room,” Lee swears in a TikTok video of her pillow hack.
“Pillowflex STAN,” Lee captioned her video. “But seriously coming from an interior designer your target pillows will look SO much better.”
How to make your Target pillows look more expensive
In her TikTok, Lee advises shoppers to purchase Target pillows in designs they love — but only if the pillows have a zipper that provides access to the inside. Then, suggests Lee, shoppers should purchase Pillowflex Synthetic inserts from Amazon and swap out the Target pillow insert for the updated Pillowflex version.
Lee claims that the specific Pillowflex brand, which retails around $30 for one 20-inch by 20-inch insert and offers a synthetic down alternative, is the key to making budget-friendly pillows more lush and choppable.
“This is the only pillow insert brand line that I buy,” she says in the TikTok. “They’re so much more affordable and they chop.”
Is the hack too expensive?
Some viewers weren’t entirely sold on this particular “hack,” as many expressed concern that Target pillows are expensive enough on their own and that purchasing another pricey insert would not make that significant difference for the added cost.
“Babe they ALREADY are so expensive,” said @halebazz.
“Am I that poor that I think Target pillows are already expensive?” wondered @coveyygirl.
“Wait, so I have to buy a $50 pillow, to then buy a $16 insert, to make my $50 pillow look like a $60 pillow?” asked a confused @littlegirlbigplate.
For people who may be on a tighter budget or looking for other options to make their pillows look more luxurious, commenters also shared some additional tips, such as:
Buy cheap covers from Ikea and use the down Pillowflex inserts.
Buy both the Pillowflex inserts and shams from Amazon.
Buy inserts a few inches larger than your pillow size, such as 24-inch inserts for 20-inch pillows to really fill them out.
Thrift for pillows and inserts.
