The faff of applying - and paying - for a tourist visa is enough to put many off visiting a destination, and the Government has been strongly urged to ensure we retain visa-free travel to Europe after Brexit.

Britons, as it stands, possess one of the world's most powerful passports. We're able to visit 173 countries out of a possible 218 without securing a visa, according to the latest annual report by the citizenship and planning firm Henley & Partners. That leaves just 45 destinations that require the rigmarole of form filling before you can jump on the plane.

So spare a thought for citizens of Syria, Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan, each of which have visa-free access to fewer than 30 countries.

The disparity between the power of different nation's travel documents is perfectly illustrated with this interactive map produced by an Australian legal website, www.gotocourt.com.au. It initially shows the visa-free map for Americans, before showing how the options become ever fewer for Russian citizens, Chinese, Indians, and - finally - those from Afghanistan.

A full version of the tool - available here - allows users to find the visa-free options for every nation on Earth. Someone has been busy with a spreadsheet.

It also highlights Australia's curious visa policy. While Australians can travel freely to 75 per cent of the planet, it only permits visa-free entry to citizens of one other country: New Zealand.

While we can consider ourselves lucky to be able to visit most of the world free of charge - and hassle - our passport is trumped by that of Germany. According to Henley & Partner, Germans can visit 176 countries without a visa.
