One of the easiest crochet projects to master is the granny square. You'll have seen them all over homeware and interiors trends – often super-colourful, these squares are used to create beautiful blankets to throw over beds and sofas.

They're so easy to make and are often the first technique that crafters master when they first learn to crochet. They can be made all in one colour, in every colour of the rainbow or in the perfect shades to match your room. The squares can either be crocheted together or joined using mattress stitch.

But did you know there's so much more that you can make with the humble granny square?

Crafters and crochet lovers across the world are taking to TikTok to share their granny square makes – and the results are jaw-dropping. With these fantastic ideas, you'll never be stuck for crochet inspiration again!

Make a colourful tote bag

There's no more stylish way to carry around your bits and bobs than in a gorgeous granny square tote.

The account coala_creations shared their beautiful tote bag on TikTok, made up of pastel squares in grey, pink and blue. The pattern involves making up 13 squares and stitching them together in a diamond shape to make up the bag.

It's the perfect-size tote if you're popping to the shops or heading out for a spot of lunch.

Shahima posted an equally gorgeous tote on TikTok, made up of 12 squares in pink, red and cream, and stitched them together to create a beautiful bag.

Crochet a cute cardigan

You can even create a cardigan through a series of granny squares sewn together. The TikTok account Vanessacrochets posted a video of her granny square cardigan, made up of huge granny squares, one for each side of the cardigan and all in an L-shape.

She used yarn in complementary camel, pink and cream colours to create the garment.

Wrap your books in a crochet creation

Crochet book sleeves are the latest must-try crochet trend, and creating one using a giant granny square is a really easy way to try the project out.

All you need to do is create a granny square about twice the height of the book you'd like to wrap.

Stitch two of the sides together and leave the other two to act as the envelope flap. Stitch a button onto the front to seal your book safely inside.

Sofie posted a video of her granny square book sleeve on TikTok, created in lovely pink, red and cream yarns.
