Inside Kate Middleton and Prince William's unusual sleeping arrangements at Kensington Palace
Kate Middleton and Prince William's former sleeping arrangements at Kensington Palace have been reported, and some royal fans were surprised to find that the couple didn't share a traditional upstairs bedroom like most families.
Because the couple have long adhered to royal protocols, neither give interviews or insights into their home life. However, a floor plan of Kensington Palace's Apartment 1A - where the Wales' used to live and is their base in London - has revealed exactly where the bedrooms are located.
With the family now living happily at Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate since the summer of 2022, their previous home has always caused some confusion.
Rather than upstairs, the main bedroom the couple shared was unusually on the ground floor of the apartment, while the upstairs was used mainly by their staff.
Meaning the Prince and Princess of Wales lived predominantly on the ground floor of the luxury property located within the royal palace in London.
Explaining why it is referred to as an 'apartment' on True Royalty's Royal Beat, British royal author Christopher Warwick said: "All of these royal residences at Kensington Palace are called apartments, which of course makes people immediately think they are flats like the American term for an apartment.
"They are not. If you think of Kensington Place in a way, it is built around three courtyards.
"If you kind of think of them as being these wonderful red brick terrace houses. Because they are all joined, but separate houses."
Because it's a royal residence, it's obvious that the 'apartment' isn't a standard living space in terms of the interior, either.
The property is fact a four storey mansion, reported to be 'enormous' all the way from the basement through to the attic.
And if that's not providing you with the ultimate 'wow factor,' Kate - who is currently undergoing preventative chemotherapy treatment - and Will's former home also features its own lift, gym and nine rooms just for the staff.
It's long been known how important it is for the Wales' to maintain some sort of privacy, especially for their young children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six.
Which is why the couple have typically refrained from giving fans an inside tour of any of their family homes.
But, during the coronavirus pandemic, Kate inadvertently gave royal followers a sneak peek into the Kensington Palace apartment when she conducted Zoom interviews in the living space of the royal home.
The photos were published in the Nursing Times, where she also recorded a video for the Nursing Now charity, for which she has been a patron since 2018.
In the snaps, fans got a glimpse of the light and bright living room, which was complete with a colourful yet traditional patterned rug, a sage green armchair, and a small wooden coffee table.
In the background of one shot, eagle-eyed fans can see a school photograph of the two eldest Wales children in a frame next to some pink roses.
