The modest fashion movement has been gathering pace of late. And rightly so. But what better way to chalk up another win than having the first ever all-hijab runway to appear at New York Fashion Week?

Earlier this week Muslim designer, Anniesa Hasibuan debuted her modest collection at Moynihan Station and became not only the first Indonesian to show at one of the official NYFW venues but also the first to present a collection that had every look outfitted with hijabs. And boy was it stunning.

The collection showcased headscarves in soft nudes, while the models’ outfits mixed elegant, silky trousers, blouses, tunics and jackets in muted metallics and pretty pinks with jewelled embellishment and fun, oversized jewellery. The overall result was modest yet totally on-trend.

Called De Jayakarta, the collection is made up of 38 ready-to-wear pieces and 10 evening looks. Through her designs, Anniesa wants to prove that ready-to-wear doesn’t have to = boring.

The mix and match outfits are designed to be worn with more paired down pieces which makes the collection really rather wearable IRL, which will no doubt get a big thumbs up from modest fashion followers as NYFW this year has contained some pretty out-there designs.

According to The Jakarta Post, Hasibuan, who only began her fashion career a year ago, always brings an Indonesian flag to the runway to remind herself that she’s representing her country. She claims the clothing worn in her hometown of Jakarta provided some inspiration for this particular collection.

“I want to bring the Indonesian name to the fashion world, and use my clothes to introduce people to the different and diverse parts of Indonesia,” Hasibuan told the publication.

A total of 48 stunning looks went down the catwalk and at the end, the young designer was given a standing ovation.
