This incredible footage shows a polar bear hunting down an adult reindeer in the water. Captured by Polish researcher Mateusz Gruszka in Svalbard, the first footage of its kind shows the bear catching the reindeer and drowning it before dragging it ashore and eating it. Although polar bears are opportunistic hunters, this is the first time they have been captured hunting reindeer. During her meal, the bear has to chase away scavengers, including polar foxes and birds before covering the remains with rocks and going for a 12-hour sleep. Irregularity in polar bear behaviour has been explained by scientists as being in part due to climate change. With the Arctic ice cap often shrinking in summer bears often need to move out of their traditional hunting grounds to find food.
