Incredible moonlit drone footage captures Iceland's midnight surfers

The majesty of Iceland’s landscapes are well-documented, but new footage captured by drone has managed to show the island in a new light.

Moonlight, to be precise. The aptly-named Iceland Under Full Moon was released by Icelandic firm Ozzo Photography last week and has drawn plaudits for its haunting take on the country’s lunar landscape.

The film also rises a cut above the rest for its cast of night-time kayakers and surfers tackling the snow-covered Icelandic coast guided only by a single torch.

However, as per usual with our northern neighbours, the landscape takes a starring role. The city lights of Reykjavik also feature, as do the nearby geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon.

But it’s the frozen shots of Iceland’s frosted coast that look at their best in the shimmering moonlight. Gulfoss, a thundering waterfall in the south of the country, can be spotted, too, as can the unmistakable standalone peak of Kirkjufell in the west. The famous Northern Lights provide occasional additional lighting.

"Our goal was to try to create something new, to see Iceland in a different way most people see it," explained Oli Haukur, from Ozzo Photography.

"It's even more beautiful during night, but to do this we need to have a full moon in order for the camera to pick up enough light to be able to film. The snow sure helps when it's dark. It helps us luminate the landscape."

Ozzo Photography specialises in filming the island.

Among its work is the music video for Cold Water, a song by Major Lazer featuring Justin Bieber, filmed across Iceland.
