In Photos: Mahatma Gandhi's exemplary life

Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat.

While his full name is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, he was conferred the appellation of the ‘Mahatma’, which means a great soul, by his friend Rabindranath Tagore.

He is acknowledged as the greatest Indian ever and was instrumental in winning India independence from British rule through his philosophy of non-violence (Ahimsa). He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

He was also fondly called ‘Bapu’ and ‘Father of the Nation’.
