With just a little over a month until series 4 of The Crown lands on Netflix, Helena Bonham Carter has revealed that a crucial part of one very important scene was her idea, telling a press conference ahead of the series launch that she felt her Princess Margaret character had sympathy for Princess Diana.

The fourth series of The Crown drops on Netflix next month and we couldn't be more excited, especially because this is the series where we're finally introduced to Emma Corrin as Princess Diana and Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.

Alongside these huge new roles, we'll welcome back fan favourite Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, who at a press conference ahead of the launch, spoke about her role as the famous royal, explaining how she came up with the idea for how her character would react to the news of Princess Diana and Prince Charles's marriage.

She stated that it quickly becomes clear "... before the marriage that there are big problems," but on the Netflix show the family encourages Prince Charles to go through with the marriage to Diana regardless.

"I like to credit myself with an idea," Bonham Carter explained. "I said, 'Hang on, I'm not really part of this.' They all looked at me - maybe I've totally imagined this, but I said, 'Well, I'm not going to be encouraging an interference with a marriage when — back when I was Vanessa Kirby back in season 1 — my whole life was destroyed by my sister interfering with a marriage.' Bonham Carter went onto explain how she believed her Princess Margaret character would sympathised with Princess Diana.

"She saw Diana being picked up by the press as she was, and she was taken as a fashion template," she said. "But she also knew that this was going to be a honeymoon — being heralded by the press then quickly turn. It's a complicated thing, marriage into the royal family. It isn't just for an emotional... it's a job, and there's a duty. I think she can see that Diana is too young."
