IMF is 'highly incompetent body that is not democratically accountable'

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Liz Truss to reverse the decision to abolish the top rate of income tax following Kwasi Kwarteng's tax-slashing Budget.

The rare intervention from the world's lender of last resort has prompted outrage among senior Conservative MPs and Telegraph readers.

The IMF heaped pressure on the Prime Minister and the Chancellor, as it urged Kwasi Kwarteng to use his fiscal plan in November to change course.

Readers said the unusual intervention on the economic policy of a sovereign G7 nation by the IMF was "outrageous" and branded the unelected body "incompetent". Many urged the Government to stick to its economic plans.
