'I'm a doctor – stop wasting your money on popular beauty product that doesn't work'
A doctor has cautioned people against spending “hundreds of pounds” on a beauty product that won’t fix a specific skincare concern – dark undereye circles.
Dark circles under the eyes are a common ailment many experience, with some people’s much more noticeable than others. They can be caused by a number of factors including genetics, stress, not getting enough sleep, allergies and more.
Though there’s absolutely nothing wrong with dark circles and, in some cases, they’ve even become somewhat of a beauty trend with people using makeup to mimic the look of genuine undereye shadows, some people still want to get rid of them.

Those looking to banish them often turn to eye creams to get the job done, but a doctor has urged people to exercise caution. Dr Ree Adel has cultivated a loyal following on TikTok, where she offers insight and tips on all manner of skincare concerns.
Dr Ree, who states in her TikTok bio that she’s a medical doctor, is passionate about skin, hair and beauty – much like her twin sister, Dr Aamna Adel, a dermatologist registrar. In a recent video, she weighed in on the reality of dark undereye circles and why, in some instances, no eye cream will work to clear them.
Speaking directly to the camera, Dr Ree said: “I hate to be the one to tell you this but if you have dark circles and you think an eye cream alone is going to fix that, it’s not.”
She elaborated that her message was “specifically” aimed at those who have “hereditary dark undereyes”, evident when a relative like a parent or grandparent also deals with the same issue, which means “they are genetic”.
Dr Ree continued: “Don’t get me wrong, eye creams can somewhat help, especially if they’ve got things like retinol, SPF or vitamin C in them. However, the only real solution for genetic dark circles is going to be something like lasers or PRP.”
PRP - Platelet-rich plasma – is a treatment which uses a patient’s own blood to help heal injuries and other conditions. It’s often used as a treatment for the whole face, where it’s sometimes dubbed the “vampire facial”.
To conclude, Dr Ree said: “It’s going to need a combination of things so if you are spending hundreds of pounds on eye creams hoping that they will fix everything, they won’t.”
People share their thoughts in the comments section. One person said: “Agree with this, no amount of eye creams helped my undereyes”. Dr Ree replied: “Eye creams are better for dark circles that are not genetic”.
Another person shared their experience trying PRP: “I will never do PRP again. The swelling was mortifying, I couldn’t look in the mirror and it takes several treatments to see results. I work full time and don’t have the time to look that crazy”.
And another added: “Makes sense. I've tried soooo many eye creams but none of them work.”
