'I'm A Celebrity' viewers and camp-mates rally around 'The Chase' star Anne Hegerty
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here contestant Anne Hegerty got the support of both her camp-mates and viewers as she broke down during her first night in the jungle.
Anne, star of ITV gameshow The Chase, and also known as The Governess, has Asperger’s, and admitted that on her arrival at the camp that there would be many things that could become a ‘source of stress’ around her.
She eventually broke down, telling her other camp-mates: “I’m just really, really close to saying I can’t do this.”
As she did, Inbetweeners star Emily Atack and X Factor singer Fleur East were among those comforting her.
“I do respond well to structure. I think it will be quite structured in there. I will understand, ‘at this time I have to fetch wood and water’, doing that will make sense,” she had said earlier.
“But being surrounded by people I can’t get away from, or those who talk all the time, can be a source of stress.”
The National Autistic Society – Asperger’s is among the syndromes on the Autism spectrum – were among the first to offer their support, tweeting:
Lovely to see everyone supporting each other.
We are backing @anne_hegerty all the way on her #imaceleb journey. https://t.co/YbmT461Vgr

Professional rugby ref Alex Lambe also pitched in, adding that Anne had supported him in the past too.
I myself was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome a few years ago. I understand how Anne feels. She is an incredible person and she is the person who gave me the confidence to speak about my diagnosis to other people. Anne is a fantastic role model to me. The Governess is amazing! https://t.co/UF0wW08FVO

Viewers, including X Factor and Big Brother star Rylan Clarke, also offered support, as did those with Asperger’s and parents of children with Asperger’s.

Say what you want but going into the camp when you have Aspergers and don't like being out of your comfort zone is bloody amazing.
As is the fact that Harry Redknapp actually knows who she is. #ImACeleb #TeamAnne #AnneHegerty

On a serious note though, hats off to Anne Hegerty for giving #ImACeleb a go, given the fact she’s on the autistic spectrum. The fact that’s being so brave in stepping outside of her comfort zone just makes me love her even more! 💛 pic.twitter.com/1KByN6Qklj
